it's usually to the tune of something upbeat but lately he says there's nothing to whistle about joe is an employee of one source his duties include taking out the trash sweeping the floors and the overall maintenance of the building he is assigned to joe is generally a happy-go lucky type of guy but recently he says he's been too upset to feel like his old self he has worked for one source for the past six years and says gradu ally his experience with the company has been getting sour one source services is a national service company con tracted by lehigh to perform custodial and general mainte nance duties whether they are in resi dence halls classrooms or driving around campus in trucks or vans one source workers have been encoun tered by every student and fac ulty member it has become so customary to see the workers around campus in fact that they often fade into the back ground the workers are hesitantly coming out of the woodwork though to tell their story - a tale that could cost them their jobs the facilities services web site www.lehigh.edu/~infac servicesguide.html states one source operates in a performance based contract where they are evaluated on a regular basis and their fee is tied to their ability to reach b&w photo by bj shepard a one source employee mops the stairs at her assigned location like so many other campus workers she remains nameless to the community world views of islam questioned by davina attar news writer speaker describes strong link between ethics religious practices carl ernst a professor at the university of north carolina at chapel hilj addressed the topic of islamic ethics in his talk in sinclair auditorium april 6 one important aspect of ethics is their ablity to adapt as society changes he said slavery which is deemed as acceptable in the bible is con sidered wrong by most cultures today he said regardless of any code ernst made it clear that ethics in every society is composed of both individual reasoning and authority ernst said he was upset by the fact that islam is largely defined by the government prisons the military and law enforcement also have their own vision of what exactly islam is many europeans claim that muslims are irrationally violent despite european conquests and invasions ernst said ernst provided a power point presentation titled justice as a perennial muslim value since the prophet muhammad was an orphan concern for the poor widows and orphans is a highly valued code in the muslim faith he explained premodern muslim societies have provided for charitable trusts such as hospitals schools and mosques hadith is the recorded say ing of the prophet muhammad these sayings supplement the quran as a source of islamic religious law hadith is concerned with faith purity ritual prayer funerals and marriage this is actually like the business law of the field ernst said it covers the behavior of the market ernst also gave his definition of jihad commonly known as holy war some muslims consider jihad a noble enterprise and it was used by some emperors for political campaigns ernst defined greater jihad as the inner struggle against evil and lesser jihad as the fight against external enemies ernst said it is important in every society to follow the set authoritarian guidelines known as laws but we must always maintain ethical reasoning val new greek election cycle in effect by devoni giddon the panhellenic and interfraternity councils are implementing task force rec ommendations for a new elec tion cycle for fraternity and sorority officers the new system calls for elections in the spring new executive board members will take over in the fall and will hold their positions for the full academic year rather than the calendar year used now under the existing system elections are held during the fall semester new officers take over after winter break and hold office for the entire calen dar year including the months of summer recess this issue has been upset ting to some sorority and fra ternity members specifically those holding executive board positions while some are annoyed with the decision others believe it could be beneficial to sororities officers who are unable to go abroad junior year will now be be able to study abroad dur ing their senior year or during the summer news writer at least now they aren't making the leaders in the sorori ties have to decide between stay ing at school to hold these posi tions and going abroad which is a huge part of the college expe rience at lehigh said alpha chi omega president monique bair 06 the greek affairs office has been working with the national headquarters of the sororities to make changes to the election system despite national head quarters by-laws that call for calendar year elections stu dents and administrators have been cooperating with the national organizations to demonstrate the value of aca demic year elections many stress the academic system's ability to strengthen greek life panhel is hopeful that the new election cycle will foster long-term working relationships with other organizations said panhellenic council president megan hamilton 05 these organizations currently operate on an academic calendar like the one we are adopting we are also hopeful that the cycle see uncertainty page 3 see islam page 5 see election page 5 i j â– -
