the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 41 tuesday april 6 2004 all the lehigh news first faculty keeps quiet about dean not available department chairs in the college of arts and sciences are being tight-lipped about a meet ing they had with james tanenbaum chairman of the board of trustees thursday tanenbaum called the meeting last monday before the chairs met with president gregory farrington at his house for lunch to discuss the dean search process which has come under fire from the cas faculty an anonymous chair said that farrington's meeting did not go as planned because he was told by tanenbaum not to come to any conclusions news writer instead farrington just reviewed the events as they occurred to that point and informed the chairs about their meeting with tanenbaum because there is no leader for the department chairs no one is willing to stand up and speak for the group one chair said this coupled with the fact that no deci sions have been made yet about how to proceed is keeping every body quiet about the meeting one chair said the meeting lasted more than two hours and that the chairs stayed after tanenbaum left to engage in fur ther discussions among three resolutions passed by the cas faculty is a call for multiple parties to exam ine ways to improve faculty gov ernance a week before the resolution was passed provost ron yoshida reported to the faculty that farrington suggested an expan sion of the provost's office this may mean creating a new posi tion to spread out some of yoshida's responsibilities farrington said he would consid er this more at the end of the semester hi the spirit of improving fac ulty governance the faculty also requested that the report complet ed in november by the task force on faculty governance be released according to the chair of the task force barbara traister the report has been delivered to farrington traister also said farrington suggested in november that next year might be a good time to look at the issue because there is so much focus on the greek life task force report this year although tanenbaum said that he could not fully speculate on the matter he did mention that the president and the provost have the complete support of the board the board has become involved to assist in resolving issues of importance to the uni versity said tanenbaum tannenbaum graduated from lehigh in 1971 and is a partner for the law firm morrison & foerster's new york office tenants landlords face off for rights by amanda macmillan editor in chief a working bathroom was all she wanted from her landlord yet nancy kanetsky 04 and her roommates walked half a block down montclair avenue to use the wendy's bathroom for an entire weekend when their toilet stopped working last year unable to reach their landlord two roommates finally tracked him down at his home that sunday afternoon bare necessities you need heat and running water kanetsky said i think that's all landlords are really required to take care of immediately but the students claim their landlord repeatedly ignored emergency calls neglected their safety and failed to follow through on promises the land lord on the other hand blames their spoiled relationship on mis communication and the tenants lack of organization with approximately 1,300 undergraduates -
