the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 40 friday april 2 2004 all the lehigh news first faculty censures administration by greg meyer the college of arts and sciences faculty has issued a stinging rebuke to the administra tion for its handling of the process that led to the appoint ment of professor anne meltzer as the college's new dean during a meeting tuesday afternoon the faculty passed three resolutions the resolutions censure president gregory farrington and provost ron yoshida while calling for the cre ation of a new search committee to select the new dean the first resolution was passed by a secret ballot with 97 faculty members in favor and 24 news writer opposed the odier two resolu tions were passed by resounding voice votes according to a reli able source who is a member of die cas faculty the first resolution deals widi die way die search was handled and expresses die faculty's objec tion to a dean appointment made widiout due consultation widi die faculty the resolution also points out a violation of die rules and procedures of the faculty because die personnel committee was given neidier die informa tion nor die time necessary to perform dieir duties the duty of die personnel committee according to chair jeff sands is to render advice to die president regarding die decision this would only be die case if die search committee was not involved the faculty argue mat because meltzer was not a candi date her appointment was in die hands of die personnel commit tee not die search committee the first resolution concludes by stating while appreciating the provost's apology for mis takes made die faculty of die college of arts and sciences is compelled to censure die provost and president for dieir misman agement of this important appointment process the diird resolution blames the situation on a failure by die administration to adequately con sult die faculty it states diat die current system of faculty gover nance was not adhered to and that the system is not adequate furthermore the actions pie cipitating tiie current crisis are viewed against a recent history ol administrative decisions and mi tiatives that have not given due regard to the faculty's input the resolution continues suggesting that die faculty believes this mis take is not an isolated incident the faculty has resolved to request the immediate dissemi nation to the faculty of the report of the task force on faculty governance it further recom mends that the faculty steering committee die university facul ty and the administration look up's music comedy spice up april less than jake rahzel battle of bands winner to play sundaze by steven munoz news writer the battle of the bands an up-and-coming comedian a politically motivated concert and a music festival featuring a member of the roots will stir the campus out of its post-spring break lull this month the four events will be organized and sponsored by university productions we're trying to wrap up the semester basical ly said olga stewart 05 music director of up the battle of the bands which will take place saturday at 8 p.m in lamberton hall will feature six bands playing for the right to open at sundaze the annual music festival while 15 bands submit ted demos only six were approved by up for the event at lamberton they'll be judged by a panel from the music committee on crowd pleasing ability and gener al music ability and the winner will play the open ing of sundaze stewart said three bands will per form at sundaze after the opening performance given by the group select ed at battle of the bands one band is the recipe self-described as appalachian roots rock the band which began in morgantown w va debuted in 1995 also performing will be rahzel formerly a member of the b&w photo by amanda macmillan dave farber 04 and jesse schwarz 04 brave the rain to perform with their band notes from the road at the senior class cap and gown kickoff tuesday at campus square the band will also compete in lip's battle of the bands tomorrow dream team lawyer to discuss dna by john misinco barry scheck the lawyer and dna expert best known for his role on oj simpson's legal dream team will deliver the tresolini lecture in law later this month scheck who co-founded the innocence project in 1992 will speak about his work to exoner ate wrongly convicted inmates through dna testing so far the innocence project which pro vides its legal assistance pro bono has helped exonerate 123 prisoners managing editor brian pinaire assistant pro fessor of political science and chair of the tresolini lecture committee said that although scheck has been a leading advo cate for reform to the criminal justice system he is unlikely to discuss his personal views on issues such as the death penalty i would think he is an aboli tionist but he's not going to come in and give an ideological talk pinaire said pinaire said scheck's career provides a good model of alter native career paths that students can take if they are interested in law here's a person mat's a practicing attorney but who's not just doing the corporate grind pinaire said if people are looking at examples of what they may do under various umbrellas here it is i always try to discourage law school any way but if you're going to go you should consider this as a member of the defense team during the oj simpson criminal trial scheck led the cross examination of dennis fung the lead criminalist for the los angeles police department scheck tried to prove that fung had lied about his handling of blood evidence in the case fung admitted that he had left a vial of simpson's blood in an unrr frigerated bag on a lab table overnight he also conceded that some blood evidence was left in plastic bags for seven hours in an unrefrigerated evi dence truck scheck also represented louise woodward the british nanny accused in 1997 of mur dering 8-month old baby matthew
