the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday march 23 2004 all the lehigh news first vol 11l no 37 fraternity faces criminal charges by trace fails assistant news editor three members of theta delta chi fraternity have been charged with providing false state ments to law enforcement about a party the brothers hosted feb 27 during the party a 19-year-old female student passed out from excessive alcohol consumption and was later hospitalized with a 30 blood alcohol level police said university police initially reported that tdk president edward cilli 06 lied to officers driving past the house on a rou tine patrol when he told them the brothers were not holding a party that night the officers who arrived at 2:52 a.m left the scene with no further investigation university police chief edward shupp later would not confirm whether cilli told police a party was not held the officers make rounds up at the fraternities every weekend shupp said they're always pret ty congenial and cilli said everything was all right the police had no reason to believe anything was wrong whether he said there was or wasn't a party going on i'm not really aware but you're putting a life in danger by delaying help when someone's really inside passed out from alco hol eric smith a university police officer said he thought the car was not on a routine patrol i wasn't working that night but yeah i think that car was actually on call up there he said smith confirmed that police do routinely drive through the hill on weekends but said offi cers rarely stop at houses unless they suspect there is a problem an anonymous university police officer said general calls of underage drinking are often ignored he said noting that if he wrote up every underage student who drank his hand would fall off when we see it show up on the police blotter we don't really take too much notice of it he said unless the kids are doing something like peeing on a police car we don't really do too much sometimes we just have to save them from themselves associate dean of students thomas dubreuil said the event was not registered with the office of fraternity and sorority affairs and was therefore unknown to both the administration and cam pus police the fraternity on disciplinary probation for violating alcohol policies was sanctioned to remain dry until the spring of 2005 the party would have remained with in policy guidelines had it involved fewer than 50 people but the fraternity would have had the rise of troy photo courtesy of the epitome troy letters 05 has defeated many opponents in grace hall winning 37 consecutive dual meets — a lehigh record topped only by senior brad dillon letters most important victory came saturday when he defeated no 1 ranked tyrone lewis from oklahoma state to win the national title at 165 pounds lehigh placed third in the national championship see story page 16 integrity statement released by greg meyer news writer the student senate academic integrity statement will be offi cially issued this week through letters sent to all faculty and stu dent mailboxes the senate officially passed the statement on nov 18 banners displaying the new statement and its accompanying symbol designed by graphic design student jared sinclair 06 will also be posted around cam pus mike d'alessio 04 president of the student senate said the statement is meant to be the first of many steps toward an official honor code for the university it would be too much of a culture shock to implement an honor code immediately so we need to take several smaller steps to get there he said marley mcdermott 06 chair of the academic committee said the senate is excited about the statement because it comes from the student body not from the administration d'alessio agreed that this was an important factor mcdermott said she hopes students will associate the state ment's symbol with academic integrity and that professors will put it on their tests as a reminder working with the faculty education policy committee the senate also hopes professors will put the statement on their syl labi karen stout professor of edu cation and chair of the university committee on discipline said that every syl labus should include the same policy on plagiarism so that instructors are being consistent the senate began working on this issue last year the research committee gathered information from other schools while the aca demic committee conducted sur veys on campus on a scale of one to 10 with one being the least severe respondents rated the problem of cheating on lehigh's campus senate readership program piloted by olivia basu assistant news editor the student senate has teamed up with national news papers to bring a readership program to lehigh in which students can pick up newspa pers for free for the past year the senate along with david joseph direc tor of residential services and sharon basso dean of students have worked to bring the free newspapers to campus the program is intended to encour age students to keep up with current events by distributing national and local papers the idea was the brainchild of former lehigh student michael zuckerman although zuckerman has since trans ferred to cornell university the senate continued the idea by electing senator rubayet pritom 06 to head the project joseph and basso worked to find funding for the project as a result the university will be piloting the readership program for the next four weeks students will be able to pick up free copies of usa today the new york times and the morning call from 13 locations across campus student senate president mike d'alessio 04 feels that the readership program will help students to become well see integrity
