the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 33 friday february 27 2004 all the lehigh news first minors provide new options by ally pereg both the college of business and economics and the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied science have introduced minors for students not enrolled in their respective schools applications for admission into each minor program will be accepted until march 1 our vision plans and preparation will constitute an excellent contribution to the learning experiences of all stu dents at lehigh said mohamed el-aasser dean of the college of engineering news writer and applied science this is truly the most important con tribution of the engineering college in recent history to the lehigh community other than to our own engineering students according to an informa tional pamphlet distributed by the business college the new undergraduate business minor program will serve to provide non-business students with the knowledge and skills which will allow them to make more informed business decisions it will enable non-business students to supplement their major studies with the business tools that are attractive to employers eighty students will be accepted this spring to partici pate in the business minor program next fall in order to be eligible stu dents must have taken the four-credit course economics 1 principles of economics the course is available for online study each summer an application form available in the business office must be submitted a transcript resume and statement of inter est must also be sent students and faculty have been working together to develop the engineering minor the minor is unique in many different ways with many distinctive features most important is the methodical process by which it's being developed el aasser said a faculty advisory board six different focus groups and a leadership team comprised of students have been respon sible for the new minor professor roger nagel a senior fellow in the dean's office at the engineering col lege said more than 100 stu dents have signed a petition to form the engineering minor society club the petition is being submitted by the lead ership group this week to get discussing culture hasnain walji speaks to students about the month of muharram celebrated by the shia community through poetry and sermons in maginnes hall feb 24 the event was sponsored by the religion studies department holocaust has lasting effect by devon giddon speaker shares story discusses role of memory the major focus of the lec ture was the way society remembers the holocaust and the role that memory plays in people's lives stier differentiated between the meaning of history and memory memory involves the impact of the past and their meaning in the present stier said history is what we need memory is what we desire he said that memory is not the actual events themselves news writer oren baruch stier assis tant professor of religious studies at florida international university spoke monday about his research of the holocaust stier is a fellow at the center for advanced holocaust studies at the united states holocaust memorial museum he has also published many articles and a book committed to memory cultural mediations of the holocaust oren baruch stier discusses the holocaust monday fight breaks out after date party by james koran news writer a fight broke out after a sorority date party around 1 a.m saturday resulting in the arrest of a kappa sigma frater nity brother daniel ehrenfeld 04 was arrested for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct ehrenfeld slammed anoth er guy down on the floor of the bus which led other people to jump into the fight said one witness no other arrests were made a commotion started on the bus as it returned from the date party when several people asked the driver to stop the bus i think they wanted to be dropped at their off-campus house so they did not have to walk all the way back said a sorority member who was pres ent when people continued to insist the driver stop others began to tell them to quiet down as the bus arrived at its drop off and students began to get off the bus ehrenfeld allegedly pushed down another person who had been telling him to keep quiet it was pretty frightening to be there when it all happened because i didn't even know why
