the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehieh news first vol 11l no 30 tuesday february 17 2004 photographs get o'reilly riled up by kristen blake managing editor online bill o'reilly called president gregory farrington a rank cow ard and strongly criticized the university thursday feb 12 dur ing a discussion with two lehigh students on his television pro gram the o'reilly factor now the president of the university and everybody else is too afraid to speak to us o'reilly said and i would be too if i allowed this kind of nonsense the nonsense in question is a series of photographs by artist larry fink who attempts to cri tique president bush for his han dling of foreign policy issues o'reilly went on to describe the exhibit as grossly offensive and questioned the school's motives for placing it an academic build ing neal hoffman 06 and michael psathas 06 travelled to fox's philadelphia studio to appeared on the show o'reilly invited hoffman to speak first hoffman attempted to explain the reasoning behind the placement of the pictures one of which depicts a george w bush look-alike groping the breast of a scantily-clad woman the art gallery placed the exhibit because they believe it has artistic value tp those who view it and to inspire political debate he said hoffman is the president of lehigh's college republicans and one of the chief opponents of the placement of the photographs in maginnes hall home to sever al academic departments includ ing political science the exhibit was chosen by i would bet the reason the picture is being displayed is because the art gallery has the clear desire to try to inspire politi cal discussion hoffman said the problem with this is that it isn't really inspiring the kind of discussion they want psathas president of the college democrats said he sup ported the art gallery's right to hang the pictures in maginnes i think by taking these down now it's a form of censorship and i don't think that's appropriate here at lehigh psathas said the location stim ulates debate and discussion he also showed o'reilly a photo graph of bill clinton and monica lewinsky that had been dis played in the same space several years ago debate about what o'reilly interjected that the president of the united states is feeling up some girl that's just stupid o'reilly said that he felt sorry for lehigh students and their parents who were wast ing 35,000 dollars a year to come to a school that would display such photos that stuff at harvard would be laughed at any place in the world he said the segment ended with o'reilly requesting that the two students deliver the following message to the university's administration you tell your president that he is a rank cow ard and that your university is embarrassing itself and i hate to see it because lehigh has a fine tradition andrew stanten director of goosey opens upper addition by matt kapitanyan news writer goosey gander recently opened its new second-story restaurant that will serve dinner 4 p.m to 10 p.m the main dining areas will continue to serve meals from 7:30 a.m until 4 p.m in the casual spirit of the traditional goosey gander restaurant the new portion is an open dinning room with an inviting atmosphere the kitchen has three chefs and the menu offers appetizers salads entrees eleven of the b&w photo byiaina erde goose's most popular sand wiches a children's menu and a nightly array of desserts including creme brulee white chocolate mousse and peanut butter pie some of the entrees include thai-inspired chicken saute pan seared salmon grilled new york strip steak and specials ranging from lobster to filet mignon although the finishing touches are not yet in place the restau rant is increase by 7 percent by meredith anderson plymton discusses reasons for increase in university tuition rates the board of trustees approved these new rates on feb 6 running the university is a 300 million operation said peggy plympton vice president of finance and administration the increase is a result of the collision of several factors for example the economy not recovering affects financial aid endowments and fund-raising the university's largest source of revenue is tuition along with fund-raising and endowments tuition helps pay for student life improvements building maintenance financial aid and faculty and staff salaries increasing the tuition maintains this pool of money that students want and need to have plympton said additionally the room and board fee covers only the cost of running the residence halls no students are paying for something that they will not utilize more then 50 percent of students receive some form of financial aid we have allotted more news writer last wednesday the univer sity announced that the price of tuition will increase by 7 per cent or 1,910 for the 2004 2005 school year tuition will now cost 29,140 while the total cost of attending lehigh will be 37,570 a 6.4 percent increase from this year the total includes a 350 increase in room and board charges the student technology fee will remain at 200 money toward helping stu dents financial needs plympton said the cutback in aid that many students experi enced this past year was a result of the economy not recovering as expected the tuition increase will help support
