the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 29 friday february 13 2004 all the lehigh news first republicans sponsor discussion by greg meyer maginnes exhibit livens up campus politics as debate continues news writer students and professors came together to engage in dialogue about art politics and the climate on lehigh's campus at an open discussion sponsored by the college republicans tuesday night brian regan 06 and kevin frost 06 both officers of the college republicans served as co-moderators for the discussion the topic of the evening was the controversy over the art exhibit larry fink the forbidden pictures which is currently being displayed inside the dußois gallery on the second floor of maginnes hall the president of the college republicans neal hoffman 06 opened the dis cussion by stating that he believed the display should not be located in a supposed ly nonpartisan academic department this represents a clear attack on conservative stu dents while leaving liberals and democrats untouched hoffman said the exhibit includes a pho tograph of a president bush look-alike groping a woman's breast hoffman also stated out right that his group would not cease its campaign until the exhibit's location is changed the college republicans sent a letter to the board of trustees wednesday to inform them of their concerns about the exhibit they also officially request ed that the pictures be moved to another location the letter said it will con tinue to be the paramount mission of the college republicans that these photo graphs are moved to a neutral location such as the main zoellner art gallery and we will continue to wage our campaign until such action is taken ricardo viera director of the lehigh art galleries said that dußois gallery has been an official art gallery since 1972 viera said he respects the opinions of those who dislike the pictures for what they are wrestlers stand proud b&w photo by andrew figuozzi the mountain hawks 20-3 will travel to stillwater okla to take on the 16-1 cowboys next week members of the wrestling team will be signing autographs outside the wrestling hall of fame see story page 16 s.t.a.r receives 1 million by jackeune leon beattie donation to provide academic opportunities news writer william beattie and his wife have recently donated 1 million to lehigh's star academy beattie 59 knew that a dona tion would be appropriate after observing the progress of star students according to henry odi executive director of academic outreach and special projects beattie is president of the strategic minerals corporation that he and his wife own in danbury conn his donation is in the form of 1 million in company stocks the s.t.a program also receives funding from several local companies and foundations odi said the donation will be a major boost to the program the endowment has made a powerful statement odi said we have a commitment to pro vide opportunities for students to be successful and be productive citizens the endowment will enable the s.t.a.r academies to stay in existence at lehigh for many years to come odi has known beattie for seven years odi's wife curtissa started the s.t.a.r academy and 15 years ago curtissa odi was formerly an assistant director of admissions at lehigh and now teaches at broughal middle school she was concerned that under privileged children were not get ting an education or support the s.t.a.r academy is designed to provide academic opportunities for local students there is no cost for students to participate in addition to stu dents with academic problems students with emotional problems can also join the program activist speaks on value of peace by michael ilnyckyj news writer a peace activist stressed the need for nonviolent living during a lecture in whitaker laboratory monday colman mccarthy is founder and president of the center for teaching peace in washington d.c he has taught courses in nonviolence to more than 6,000 students at academic institutions including georgetown law school american university and high schools the lecture titled nonviolence in a time of war began with a moment of silence for victims of violence violence includes not just domestic military and street violence but economic harm from sanctions and mis treatment of animals mccarthy said mccarthy said that uniting against violence should not be limited to preventing hot vio lence such as terrorism school shootings and domestic abuse cold violence or violence that most people are not directly exposed to must be given an equal share of attention he added an example of cold violence offered by mccarthy were the economic sanctions imposed on iraq by the united nations which he said
