against the public interest in addi tion he said that an agency of the government should be designated as the official authority for determin ing facts about merchandise dr haring traced the position of the consumer through the history of civilization from the primitive man through medieval times when guilds offered goods of quality to only the rich until the present day when the trade mark is the measure of qual ity he showed how the consumer did his buying it has come about that trade-marked merchandise rules our lives dr haring said comparing nationally advertised and private brand products dr haring said that a private brand is a dangerous purchase if neither its sponsor nor the retailer urging its purchase is well and favorably known to the buyer that the controversy over ath letic management which culminat ed in the abolition of the board of control of athletics by the board of trustees last week began in the early eighties is shown m data gathered from the records of a e buchanan executive secretary of the alumni association a football team was organized by the students independent of uni versity administration in 1882 after several students had witnessed a game played between yale and harvard the lehigh team was formed at the suggestion of these students and participated in its first contest with a class team from the university of pennsylvania in 1883 at this time the team had no equipment beyond a canvas jersey owned by one of the players and will distribute review today gives lecture on lightning the appearance of the perm team in full uniform stimulated the lehigh student to a search for funds they passed a hat and on the strength of the collection ordered uniforms from a sporting house in 1884 the team played four games two with lafayette orie with rutgers and one with hav erford it was found soon afterwards that the donations of the spectators at these games were not sufficient to cover the expenses which the team had incurred an appeal to the alumni was then made which re sulted in a gift of money large enough to finance a football season alumni finance team following this action members of the alumni agreed to finance the football team on the condition that they be given charge of the team's financial accounts this arrange ment was approved and continued for several years it is to be noted that no specific rules were in force concerning the qualifications of players on the le high football squad at times mem bers of the faculty took part in the contests and it was not uncommon in the event of an especially impor in the university and that said buchanan is how the students the alumni and the faculty came together in the management of athletics athletic committee organized in 1910 a definite athletics com education the business was en tirely apart from the university with an athletics fee of 10 imposed on all students and regular admis sion charges at the gate during the same year howard bosey reiter came to lehigh to coach football he held this posi tion until 1911 when he was reliev ed of the job to become director of physical education with bosey reiter organized business management began he took charge of all accounts and handled them efficiently until the board of control of athletics with a graduate manager was formed in 1924 the abolition of this system was effected last week to be re and the cathode ray oscillograph the demonstra tion was aided by the use of lan tern slides which compared actual wave forms with calculated ones in the discussion which followed this paper professor miller pointed out that a very rapid increase of knowledge of lightning phenomena in the last five years has been due to methods of calculations by oper ational calculus and to the check ing of calculations by the use of th cathode ray oscillograph at lehigh the theory involved in these calculations has been taught for three years said professor miller the department of electri cal dean c m mcconn and w r okeson secretary and treas urer of the board of trustees were interviewed this week commenting on coaching posi tions mr okeson said that since the director of athletics will prob ably not be chosen for some time the question of football and lacros se mentors for the coming season must rest with president richards who is at present acting in the ca pacity of director the lacrosse coach's contract ex pired last spring and austin tate's ends in february he said mr buchanan when asked the possible identity of the new athlet ics director replied for the admin istration that no prospects for the position have yet been considered athletic director discussed the job calls for a man with considerable academic as well as athletic background he said mr okeson in response to the same question pointed out that with the success of the new department of athletics dependent on the qual ity and character of its director president richards will comb the entire country for the proper per son collecting applications from eligible men and sifting them with the utmost care no drastic action will be taken on problems concerned with the present situation in athletics he relative to the reason for the ab olition of the board of control of athletics mr okeson mr buch anan and dean mcconn were unit ed in the opinion that the system was weak economically and in ef two important jobs coincident with their duties as board committeemen faculty members and students were busied with university occupations and alumni members with their in dustrial connections also an organization of three groups with varying opinions can only reach compromises on the af fairs of athletic management he asserted but the dean was quick to deny any intention of casting unwarrant ed packard auditorium the lecture the third in the uni versity series was delivered before about 200 students and faculty mem bers the reason for this gain by the consumer dr haring explained is that superselling devices keep ev eryone progressing material prog ress he added precedes mental development in the history of civil ization dr haring defined supersales manship as the use of systematic high-pressure sales devices to make consumers buy more articles than they need or can pay for public is urged to buy today people buy very few things dr haring said but on the contrary things are sold to them using sold in the sense that the seller urges us to buy this continual uring to buy constitutes the alleged menace which can be summed up in the word supersales manship defending advertising against the criticism to which it has been sub jected dr haring claimed that it is almost impossible to find a wide ly advertised product which does not give good value advertising is a guarantee of quality it is edu cating it instigates improvements it makes profits more stable and it causes manufacturing to be more efficient he said in reply to the questions are the present evils of advertising and installment selling unavoidable and is the waste of fashion uncon trollable dr haring stated that the interrelationship of advertising installment selling and fashion is such that three minor changes can make the situation healthier he suggested that installment sellers have no ther claim against the buyer besides the repossession of the article sold forcing sellers to protect the consumer against per sonal bankruptcy sellers would be more cautious sales pressure and fashion pressure would be relaxed suggests advertising control dr haring also suggested that the federal trade commission be given jurisdiction of any claim of false advertising or advertising pazzetti disgusted with athletic policy alumni bulletin prints letter of former all-american disgust for the pure athletic pol university to give help to a boy who needs it who plays football is condemned by pazzetti he says that he can name many men who were helped at le high besides himself and then asks if they are a lacrosse coach's contract ex pired last spring and austin tate's ends in february he said mr buchanan when asked the possible identity of the new athlet ics director replied for the admin istration that no prospects for the position have yet been considered athletic director discussed the job calls for a man with considerable academic as well as athletic background he said mr okeson in response to the same question pointed out that with the success of the new department of athletics dependent on the qual ity and character of its director president richards will comb the entire country for the proper per son collecting applications from eligible men and sifting them with the utmost care no drastic action will be taken on problems concerned with the present situation in athletics he added in order that the new di rector may take office as free of complicating circumstances as pos sible every effort will be made to keep business pertaining to his de partment as a standstill when confronted with the rumor to the effect that austie tate would be made athletics director and alonzo stagg football coach both mr okeson and mr buch anan denied the truth of the state ment as a mere figment of imag ination incidentally stagg was reported last week in a philadelphia paper as having applied for the position of gridiron mentor in a pacific coast university board of control discussed relative to the reason for the ab olition of the board of control of athletics mr okeson mr buch anan and dean mcconn were unit ed in the opinion that the system was weak economically and in ef ficiency there are two aspects of the old system which contributed to its weakness dean mcconn said."ef ficient committee management can not be carried out by men whose attention is divided between two important jobs coincident with their duties as board committeemen faculty members and students were busied with university occupations and alumni members with their in dustrial connections also an organization of three groups with varying opinions can only reach compromises on the af fairs of athletic management he asserted but the dean was quick to deny any intention of casting unwarrant ed reflection on the members of the board of control these men have done a fine job of direction considering the inher ent weaknesses of the system it self he said they deserve com continued on page four packard auditorium the lecture the third in the uni versity series was delivered before about 200 students and faculty mem bers the reason for this gain by the consumer dr haring explained is that superselling devices keep ev eryone progressing material prog ress he added precedes mental development in the history of civil ization dr haring defined supersales manship as the use of systematic high-pressure sales devices to make consumers buy more articles than they need or can pay for public is urged to buy today people buy very few things dr haring said but on the contrary things are sold to them using sold in the sense that the seller urges us to buy this continual uring to buy constitutes the alleged menace which can be summed up in the word supersales manship defending advertising against the criticism to which it has been sub jected dr haring claimed that it is almost impossible to find a wide ly advertised product which does not give good value advertising is a guarantee of quality it is edu cating it instigates improvements it makes profits more stable and it causes manufacturing to be more efficient he said in reply to the questions are the present evils of advertising and installment selling unavoidable and is the waste of fashion uncon trollable dr haring stated that the interrelationship of advertising installment selling and fashion is such that three minor changes can make the situation healthier he suggested that installment sellers have no ther claim against the buyer besides the repossession of the article sold forcing sellers to protect the consumer against per sonal bankruptcy sellers would be more cautious sales pressure and fashion pressure would be relaxed suggests advertising control dr haring also suggested that the federal trade commission be given jurisdiction of any claim of false advertising or advertising pazzetti disgusted with athletic policy alumni bulletin prints letter of former all-american disgust for the pure athletic pol
