the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first tuesday february 10 2004 vol 11l no 28 packard media wall unveiled by lauren kalafa news writer a new state-of-the-art media wall has been designed for packard laboratory to increase interest in the engi neering college mohamed el-aasser dean of the rc rossin college of engineering and applied science was interested in showcasing new projects that students and faculty are involved in the media wall is the third step in a lengthy process called transforma tion of the college which started about two and half years ago el-aasser said as a result of our successes so far in the first two steps of the transformation process we are now referring to the renaissance of the college the lobby home to the classic packard automobile was becoming too familiar to engineering students and visi tors el-aasser said the primary goal of the media wall is to make the lobby more engaging and exciting the first improvement to occur was the addition of new lighting prior to this change the display was described as dim and dark mary holland an architect with the dagit-saylor firm and facilities services spent two years trying different lighting schemes they also conceptu alized adding materials that the dean had in mind for showing off the university b&w photo by andrew figuozzi the new artist kris krs-one parker who has 16 gold platinum records spoke at packard laboratory about the history influence and importance of the hip hop movement rap is something we do parker said hip-hop is something we live the difference between the two is massive parker said hip-hop is a real con sciousness that strives to establish health love aware ness and wealth rap is something produced for pure entertainment the presentation of hip hop via television and radio only demonstrates the etfects of the movement parker explained this is not hip-hop parker said the cause and original essence of the move ment the thing that causes these effects is the conscious ness of hip-hop most fans of hip-hop do not know its true roots and are not aware of what was put into the movement that made it what it is today parker participated in and fueled the hip-hop move ment he describes his mot tos as a result of the 35 years of experience he holds as a metaphysician this is a phi losophy he says he learned from his mother his philosophy which he adopted at a very young age revolves around concepts such as keeping it real and having the courage to be you hip-hop parker said allows these concepts to thrive in people the beginning of hip-hop as parker described it flour ished out of racism integra tion and riots in the 19605 he said the fbi was running counter-intelligence pro grams attempting to stamp out all budding or existent social movements through assassinations and the distri bution of heroin into black and latino communities meanwhile at age seven parker and his friends were playing in a park in the bronx listening to the empowering music of james brown it was in this park that children first began break dancing to the beats and needle-dropping of cool dj herk parker said parker said that as chil dren come together to listen to this dj and his music they were united by a common feeling of oppression this new music that teens in the bronx began dancing to in the afternoons was as parker said the beginning of a movement that would be guiding youth and raising one's self worth as new and different djs entered the scene in the mid 19705 each one brought with global citizen program slated for fall by tom defiore incoming freshmen can enroll to gain new perspectives on other cultures multifaceted and convoluted than any other century president farrington was instrumental in developing the program he formulated the idea more than two years ago that students needed to become more globally-orient ed he believes that this pro gram will help them accom plish this goal today's graduates will live in a global world farrington said it is important they are prepared to meet the world more than halfway and to have an appreciation for dif ferent cultures the program is designed to expose students of all majors issues of global politics com parative religion cultures and ethics systems the program is also designed to challenge students to think beyond the boundaries of american cul ture and experience the program will aim to produce graduates ready to interact with people of many different cultures faiths and backgrounds farrington said news writer lehigh's new global citi zenship program which is designed to enable and empower students with the tools to thrive in a global economy will debut this fall the program which is not a major or a minor but will consist of 26 credits and will appear on transcripts designed to prepare students for life in the 21st century - a life that could be much more after president farrington presented his initial concept several faculty members including university chaplain lloyd steffen gordon beam and norman girardot con tributed different ideas to help develop and implement this concept the basic idea for the
