the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 25 friday january 30 2004 all the lehigh news first department mourns loss of ta by kristen blake barrett memorial ceremony to be held at university center feb 12 managing editor online fellow in the english depart ment she was eager to share not just the daily details the routines and pains of her col leagues academic life but how people were feeling she wanted to know what people took delight in what annoyed or frustrated them and what they hoped for in their futures barrett was a part of the lehigh community since the summer of 1998 when she began work on her master's degree in english she com pleted that degree in january 2001 then began work on her doctoral degree as a teaching fellow barrett was responsible for teaching introductory english composition classes in addi tion to pursuing her own coursework graduate student bob kilker said nancy was per haps the most dedicated instructor i've ever known she put countless hours into course planning conferencing with students and paper eval uations she was thoughtful in designing the syllabi for her classes and that thoughtful ness carried through into her day-to-day teaching vincent sica 07 a student who took barrett's english composition class last semes ter said that barrett held her students to high standards and helped them improve their writing with her insightful cri tiques it was kind of a one-on one thing not like talking to a teacher sica said she seemed like a really cool per son faculty in the english department became aware that something was wrong when the normally conscien tious barrett failed to turn in her grades by the day they were due after receiving several reports of her absence universitv police were asked the english department is planning a memorial ceremo ny for teaching fellow nancy barrett who passed away dec 22 in her saucon village apartment professors teaching assis tants and students will come together feb 12 in the university center's asa packer room to honor the memory of a colleague who brought joy and dedication to her classes and personal rela tionships nancy was an incredibly warm and thoughtful person nicole batchelor a teaching miniversity expands course options by leigh gilsenan news writer miniversity a lehigh non academic course program is expecting one of its most popular semesters due to high enrollment miniversity director ginger deßias said there are 200 people enrolled in the 15 miniversity courses offered this semester the most popu lar are welding 101 kickboxing i yoga i and wine without pretense registration took place jan 20 to jan 23 the pro gram which began 17 years ago is offered by the dean of students office the program was created to provide the lehigh com munity with opportunities for personal growth and enrich ment in areas of special inter est deßias said with new courses being added each semester and popular ones growing in enrollment the success of the program is exponential the program offers anywhere from 13 to 15 courses depending on student demand the spring semester is classes held despite snow b&w photos by amanda wright lehigh's campus was blanketed with snow following a massive snowstorm tuesday night to wednesday morning approximately 5 inches of snow fell locally area public schools closed in mass along with several neighboring colleges sexual assault group offers help by jackeline leon lehigh faces similar statistics as campuses nationwide news writer a support group available to those that have been sexually victimized or know someone who has been assaulted is now entering its second semester the sexual assault survivor support group was organized by leigh ann didomenico 04 kristen handler director of the women's center laurie gray and beth golden of counseling services and steve mcallister sexual violence coordinator this semester we are hoping that the group will have the opportunity to grow didomenico said the group is really just there so that sur vivors of sexual assault men and women have a place to go where other people understand listen and support them the main goal for the group is to let lehigh students know the service is available to them all shared information is confi dential lehigh isn't as different from other colleges mcallister said people don't realize how much of a problem sexual assault is because most cases go unreported victims don't know where to go and are scared of being judged or not believed according to statistics only 16 percent of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to police victims are so traumatized that they don't know what to do gray said it's an isolating experience coordinators of sass urge students to educate themselves about sexual assault the more a person knows the easier it will be to prevent sexual assault from occurring said gray on campus several educa tional programs are held to raise awareness mcallister came to
