the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first 1 vol 11l no 19 friday november 14 2003 three arrests made in robberies byjohnmisinco managing editor online a bethlehem man and two teenagers have been arrested in connection with a robbery spree near campus monday evening the suspects allegedly used a pellet gun to rob two people and tried to rob three others the morning call reported the three suspects were iden tified in the express-times as eliezer jiminez 18 kaishif williams 17 and tyrone neely 14 according to the morning call police were first called to the area when the three suspects robbed lang lin a 33-year-old lehigh employee at packer and brodhead avenues at approxi mately 8 p.m the robbers took 60 from lin who fled in his car and called police from his home in hellertown police said according to the morning call police said jiminez and the two teens continued on packer avenue and robbed samuel wallace 04 as he was driving away from boyer street the alley between birkel and montclair avenues jiminez pointed the gun and took identification and bank cards but was only able to take 2 cash police said jiminez tried using wallace's debit card at the wawa on east morton street but was unable to get any money the morning call reported according to the morning call police arrested the three suspects near wawa police said jiminez told them he tried rob bing three others near campus jiminez said he pulled a gun on a woman on packer avenue but did not take the 2 she offered police said the three continued walking near campus and came across another student police said jiminez told them that they did not rob the student because he only had a credit card according to die morning call jiminez told police he had planned to rob another student but was scared off because too many people were around jiminez was sent to the northampton county prison on 20,000 bail and the teens were sent to northampton county juvenile detention the express-times reported that police suspect the three sus pects were involved in a wave of off-campus robberies earlier this semester anyone with informa tion about the robberies should call lehigh police at 610 758 4200 or leave an anonymous tip at 610 758-6559 lehigh chief of police edward shupp announced the robberies and subsequent arrests in a campus-wide e-mail sent tuesday afternoon shupp also said that two juve niles were apprehended in con nection with recent incidents of car vandalism around campus for more information about the arrests including campus charged with posses sion and intent to deliver drugs state police seized 1,500 ecstasy pills 9,000 hits of lsd and more than two ounces of cocaine are illegal drug use and project impact related the undercover bust occurred two years after the controversial pol icy came into effect in 1999 project impact sent students into an uproar the new restrictions were an effort by john smeaton vice provost for student affairs together with the robert wood johnson foua dation and the university adminis tration to end binge drinking and improve lehigh's social life the policies regulated such things as the amount of alcohol at an event the length of a social event and acts such as shotgun ning and funneling in the years following the implementation of project impact questions surfaced were restric tions on alcohol students asked increasing the use of illegal drugs numerous sources claim that since the origin of project impact illegal drug use on cam pus has increased said brian coulombe 04 president of sigma alpha mu while it is impossible to tell if project impact has actually caused this trend i think that it makes a rea sonable argument that drugs are easier to conceal behind closed doors this makes drugs a more attractive alternative to drinking in a project impact environ ment the background of project impact project impact had its origins in a national survey on college alcohol use which was conduct ed by the harvard school of public health in 1993 lehigh participated in the study which surveyed over 17,000 students and 140 colleges and universi ties according to news writer the university commence ment committee and the ad ministration have decided to both discontinue the january commencement ceremony and reform the diploma policy next school year the two changes aren't directly related but the one got us thinking about the other said richard weisman chair of the commencement committee initially we started looking at schools of comparable size and tradition and we realized lehigh was the only one with two com mencement ceremonies then this got us thinking about the diploma policy in the end we decided to increase the conferring of diplo mas to three times a year while eliminating the january gradua tion ceremony the commencement com-mit tee's recommendation was moti vated by their desire to reform policies that they felt were ineffi cient practically the commence ment ceremonies will be limited to increase attendance susan lantz associate dean of students said lantz said the elimination of the january ceremony will be offset by the university's deci sion to award degrees three times per year a lot of times graduate and undergraduate students com plete their four years here at lehigh and need only a few more credits to graduate
