misinco managing editor online kashi johnson knows what it is like to step out of her comfort zone an assistant professor in the ater johnson is one of the few black faculty members at lehigh being on the faculty itself is an honor and privilege johnson said but as a faculty member of color you're definitely in a group smaller than the majority johnson first came to lehigh as an undergraduate in the early 19905 as one of the few black stu dents she had to quickly adapt to her new setting i wasn't the best student but was affected in many ways that i t-17 wt'i^m in hhq^blai^tlllll had to deal with johnson said i had to come out of my comfort zone hi 1999 she returned to her alma mater this time to teach once again she had to step out of her comfort zone as the nation becomes more diverse students who have little interaction with people of different races may not be prepared for the real world hi fact johnson said b&wphoto by marisa brickman many students have told her that she was the first black instructor they had if we add more faculty of color there is more ability to con nect and cross the lines johnson said college is a time of learning growth and experiencing things you may not have experienced before how can you go wrong being exposed to more minorities comprise approxi mately 13 percent of the full time lehigh faculty this trans lates into 10 black professors nine hispanics and 44 asians these numbers have changed little during the past decade hi 1992 10.9 percent of lehigh's fac kashi johnson assistant professor in theater offers suggestions to students participating in speaking freely a production about minority students at predominately white col leges johnson is one of 10 black professors at lehigh service office aids community by diana zborovsky news writer the community service office at lehigh offers many services and programs for lehigh students and the com munity to participate in the community service office located in the ulrich stu dent center is a student-run office students can pick projects in which they would like to par ticipate and can lead their own programs it is more of a community organization said carolina hernandez community service program coordinator we listen to the community voice and what the community's needs may be students can then participate in anything that they are com fortable or eager to do there are many students who may not be comfortable spending hours in a soup kitchen and would rather organize donations or help fund raise whereas other students dive right in and are comfortable publicly rallying for a cause hernandez said the beauty of community service is that you choose what you would like to do or are comfortable doing the community service office provides all types of services in which students can get involved tutoring is offered to children in the community this provides both homework assistance and one-on-one mentoring service and assistance are provided to the homeless and hungry as well the community service office also sponsors feel good fridays in which students sign up to do two hours of various community service projects on a friday next friday students will assist in painting a mural with community children on oct 26 more than 35q lehigh volunteers and the com munity helped out with senate develops integrity statement by jessica glowinski assistant news editor the student senate's aca demic committee is developing an academic integrity statement it hopes will be made part of the university's code of conduct to deter plagiarism and academic dishonesty a draft of the statement was shared with the senate at a meeting on oct 21 marley mcdermott 06 the chairper son of the academic committee said the group has been working on the statement since last year and is also creating a symbol to represent academic integrity revisions still have to be made to both the statement and the symbol mcdermott said but the committee members will begin working with the education policy board to inte grate both of them into the code of conduct during the next year senate vice president sarah friedman 04 said the statement and symbol can be used as tools for professors to discourage cheat ing in their classes for example professors could include the state ment on their syllabi or put the symbol on their exams we're encouraging profes sors from the get-go as part of the introduction to the course to say to their students i'm going to hold you to these ethi cal standards to as being part of this class perform your own work be honest and not cheat friedman said senate president mike d'alessio 04 said the symbol could also be placed in academ ic buildings and academic advis ers could have their students read over the statement before receiving their registration pins the senate's long term goal is to eventually create an honor code for lehigh that would be more binding than the academ ic integrity statement research conducted by the academic committee last year indicated that an honor code wouldn't be successful on campus however so the statement is a way to build support for a stronger pol icy this is the first step toward
