schimmel contributing editor ali bachani seems like a typical freshman he is 18 years old and has floppy hair he lives in taylor college and wants to be a com puter engineer he has had a typical freshman experience he enjoyed orienta tion made friends even fell in a pond while hiking in the pocono mountains during a camping trip with the global union what sets bachani apart he is the only student from pakistan in the freshman class diversity has been a priority since the president's office issued a jljii*j^jl.\3ixx in parti of 3 diversity initiative in september 2002 in plain terms the universi ty wants a more diverse student body bachani's presence here is only one example of how the pol icy is influencing the campus the supreme court said it was acceptable to consider race and ethnicity a factor in the admissions process in gratz v bollinger last b&wphoto by marisa brickman june this important case involv ing the university of michigan undergraduate admission policy has had disabilities ali bachani 07 is the only member of the freshman class from pakistan bachani repre sents lehigh's efforts to diversify the student body by attracting international students president's salary increases by greg meyer news writer president gregory farrington's salary has increased by 49 percent since he first began at lehigh in 1998 according to statistics given by the chronicle of higher education and the philadelphia inquirer farrington's salary for the 1998-99 school year was 267,823 without benefits his last reported raise from 2001 to 2002 was a 6.4 percent increase bringing his new salary to 400,000 because the value of farrington's benefits package dropped from 55,151 to 41,853 his total compensation only increased 2.5 percent his benefits package which does not include the use of a universi ty-owned house has always hovered between 40,000 and 42,000 except during the 2000 2001 school year when it hit its peak the president's salary increase is determined each year by the board of trustees denise blew associate vice president for finance and administration said there are two factors that go into deciding the president's salary the president's perform ance over the previous year is reviewed against board expecta tions of the role blew said the board takes into account the president's total compensa tion compared to presidents salaries of peer institutions the inquirer ranked farrington as the fifth highest paid college president among 39 area colleges judith rodin president of the university of pennsylvania topped the list with a total com pensation of 845,474 arthur rothkopf president of lafayette college was ranked 10th receiv ing 330,620 the chronicle of higher education did a report last year on the growing number of pri vate-college presidents earning minors cited at fraternity function by greg meyer news writer seventeen minors were cited for underage drinking at crivellaro's banquet hall last thursday evening pennsylvania state police officers responded to a com plaint that minors were fre quenting the establishment and being served alcohol a theta chi fraternity date party was being held when the police entered sergeant jeff backenstoss the district office commander for the state police bureau of liquor control enforcement's allentown office could not provide any additional infor mation because the case is still being investigated he said that if any charges were filed against the owner of the hall frank crivellaro they would have to originate from the liquor control board not from his office lehigh police chief ed shupp said it is likely but not guaranteed that a report of these violations will come through his office backenstoss said that the information would eventually be passed on chris mulvihill assistant dean of students for residence life said he expects to receive a report of these citations which will be filtered through the university police when these reports arrive mulvihill said they will be handled as violations of the university code of conduct even though the students were off campus at the time of the incident an anonymous junior who was at the party described the incident in more detail the woman said that every one was carded and separated into groups based on age those under 21 were subjected to a breathalyzer test and citations were issued tj
