the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 9 friday october 3 2003 all the lehigh news first a&s majors seek career assistance by stephanie wffitacre news writer students expect assistance in finding a job to come with their annual tuition unfortunately many stu dents feel they are not getting the help they deserve from career services specifically many arts and science stu dents say they are not getting the same amount of support that their business and engi neering counterparts receive the career fair best served the business and engi neering students kate loßalbo 05 said but that was the way it was promoted there were not many delu sional english majors running around looking for jobs the take toward arts and science majors is more on a one-on one basis there are no large fairs for them to go to because the range of jobs for each major is so wide according to statistics pub lished by the university how ever the percentage of arts and science students who graduated last year while still searching for a job was only 7 percent eight percent of engi neering students and 9 percent of business students were still trying to land a job donna goldfeder director of career services agreed with these statistics « it is true that on the surface it appears that business and engineering students have more options but that is simply not the case goldfeder said goldfeder said this misper ception is caused by the lack of specific skills that many arts and science majors have there are more advanced offers to students with majors that specifically cater to one particular job or career track there are just as many jobs for arts and science students there is just more work required on their part many students however do not agree some arts and science majors feel that career services caters to business and engineering students and leaves them out in the cold to fend for themselves when it comes to getting jobs the whole online aspect of career services is a good resource for personal atten tion but i think going to a head-hunter is probably a bet ter bet andrea dierna 04 said goldfeder said that for arts and science students the job application process is mosdy in the spring semester we have to wait for some one to get out of the chair before we can get into it goldfeder said while many business and engineering firms know the exact number of jobs available in september this is not the case in many other careers the career fair which was dominated by business and engineering corporations gave many students a sense of distress that they will not find a job goosey to add bar restaurant i byallypereg ; news writer anticipation has begun as students have heard rumors and seen construction begin ning atop a favorite lehigh hangout goosey gander 11 renovations have com menced as the goose plans to transform its second floor into a new bar and restaurant goosey gander 11 tradi tionally a favorite dining spot for lehigh students is located b&wphoto by alex schwendeman at 102 w 4th st last year the deli began accepting lehigh's goldplus debit cards tony silvoy owner of goosey gander is hopeful that the new bar and restau rant will be ready to open at the end of october plans for the renovation were initially set into motion in august however the process was halted due to bad weather construction on goosey gander deli and restaurant will be completed at the end of october ees department advances programs by jennifer iwinski news writer a trip to tibet and major departmental renovations are a few of the immediate and long-term goals in lehigh's earth and environmental sci ences department two faculty members three graduate students and one post doctoral research scientist will leave sunday on a month-long trip to study tectonics mountain build ing and seismology in tibet said professor peter zeitler who is par ticipating in the project the international project termed geodynamics of indentor corners will have approximately 15 principal investigators from various insti tutions on site zeitler said this is just one of several trips he said we'd planned to go in may but were delayed by sars sars is a viral respiratory ill ness that spread through parts of asia earlier this year after a 16-hour flight to hong kong the group will spend a day in cheng du china meeting col leagues and exchanging currency the next day they will fly to tibet's capital lhasa from there another day will be required to reach the field area by automobile but they're paving all the roads now zeider said so it's not exacdy getting on a yak molly malloy a second year ees graduate student will use her time in tibet to study moun tain building i'm studying how rivers can make mountains malloy said with a half-week trip there and a half-week trip back it's only about three weeks in the field malloy who received her bachelor's degree from the university of south carolina has positive things to say about lehigh's department we've got a lot of different people in different disciplines within the same field here malloy said when you put it all together you get a really neat pic ture of what's going on in the earth anne meltzer professor and ees department chair is also bound for tibet specializing in seismology the study of earth quakes meltzer will be checking seismometers already in place there as ees chair meltzer is also involved in the push toward expanding the department as part of an environmental initiative a proposal for university funds to expand the ees department both meltzer and zeider for mer department chair have played active roles in creating the initiative new faculty the possibil ity of a new - or at least renovated - building and new curriculum are all part of the proposal see careers page 5 see initiative page 5 see goose page 5 l__pfl''lßr'^^_s__s ■■i w^sassf t ;
