the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 8 tuesday september 30 2003 all the lehigh news first 1 professors discuss patriot act by leigh paterson news writer the usa patriot act is worded so broadly that it cre ates confusion and allows interpretation of what it really means general counsel frank roth said thursday in linderman library faculty members discussed the controversial usa patriot act proposed by the bush administration and passed by congress in the aftermath of sept 11 the discussion was sponsored by friends of the lehigh libraries the experts dissected the long and complicated anti-ter rorism act and commented on its impact on libraries foreign students and the liberties of the general public other speakers included american studies director john pettegrew librarian gail kriebel and immigration specialist gisela nansteel roth outlined the parts of the act that have created the most controversy in academia roth graduated from harvard law school and has been practicing law for 21 years he has been the uni versity general counsel since april 2001 the fbi and cia have a sort of running wish list for surveillance and investigation mechanisms that they want roth said the patriot act is basically a compilation of this pre-existing list it was a marketing tech nique by the fbi and congress roth said who could be opposed to something called the patriot law right after sept 11 the act's name is deceiving roth said usa patriot act is an acronym for uniting and strengthening america by providing appropriate tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism the act amends many pre existing federal laws and well as creating several new ones the act states that an fbi agent may apply for a court order to get any tangible materials from anyone who could possibly have some thing to do with a terrorism investigation less specific cause is required than before and the privilege has been yearly challenge tests rotc group by matt konek news writer a select group of rotc stu dents will compete in this year's ranger challenge in which a variety of physical and tactical skills are tested the annual competition is held at fort indiantown gap in annville pa from ocl 24 to 26 approximately 20 teams from new york new jersey and pennsylvania compete in the ranger challenge every year team members are selected from the lehigh valley rotc which is based at lehigh and con sists of students from 12 area col leges the students must meet and maintain high standards accord ing to col william kuchinski chair of the department of military science the members are selected based on their performance in their rotc training and must hold good standing in the depart ment along with maintaining good grades kuchinski said membership to the ranger challenge team is open to any stu dent but the team usually consists of rotc members said capl jeffrey weinhofer assistant profes sor of military science weinhofer said that since b&wpholo by katie young stand-up comedian tony woods performs for a crowd during a one-hour show in lamberton hall saturday night engineering minor offered fall 2004 by michelle brinker news writer a group of professors is planning to introduce a new engineering minor to provide non-engineering students with the opportunity to gain insight into the field the minor will be offered for the first time during regis tration for fall 2004 courses it will be offered to students in the college of business and economics and the college of arts and sciences the goal of this minor is to give students an idea of what engineers do - how they think and understand the thinking techniques of engi neers said roger nagel sen ior fellow for creative pro grams in p.c rossin college of engineering the group hopes to increase students perspectives on the various areas of engineering by bringing professors of dif ferent curriculum together in the same courses the courses will be taught by an integrated team of cross disciplinary professors each of the 12 new courses will be taught by two professors there will be a list of faculty members to serve as guest lec turers the engineering minor has two prerequisites math 51 and physics 5 or 10 students will have to take two required introductory courses and then choose three elective courses one from the engineering fundamentals group one from the integrated engi neering group and the third from either category the minor will not qualify students to be engineers but it will give them the ability to better understand and work with engineers in a profession al environment when it comes time for me to solve finance-related prob lems in the real world i hope having taken the classes for the engineering minor will allow me to think about other routes to a solution said tom auchter 05 a financial eco nomics major the engineering college dean's office in conjunction with the dean's offices of the college of business and economics and the college of arts and sciences has organ ized a group of faculty mem bers the group has been col laborating to figure out what the minor will include the faculty group created surveys that polled students and companies on their opin ions about the idea of an engi neering minor after reading a brief summa ry of the proposed programs 48 percent of the 140 students expressed interest in the minor forty-eight percent of the 40 companies surveyed said a minor in engineering would make students more attractive to employers i feel that a minor in engi neering will open up many more career opportunities for me said david dick 05 an accounting and finance major forty-four percent of the companies surveyed said that they felt the minor would increase job opportunities emory zimmers professor of industrial and systems engi neering has had contact with a variety of companies see rotc page 3 see minor page 3 see patriot page 3 ; w -«^ men's soccer team ties holy cross 0-0 saturday see story page 16 sports 14-16 women's soccer 15 football 16 men's soccer 16 guest speaker dis cusses sexual assault and the effects of alcohol see story page 4 news 1-4 college news briefs 2 sexual assault 4 levi strauss closes remaining u.s plants due to overwhelming competition see story page 7 business 7-9 levi plants close sarbox act 7 business briefs quick studies have shown that classical music helps cows produce more milk source www.amusingfacts.com
