especially in regard to the moratorium on war debts and the farm board tempest defends democrats in defending the democratic par ty tempest said that there were two reasons why it should be placed in power namely the republican party and the democratic platform hoover tempest stated insists on a high tariff in spite of a petition signed by noted economists while roosevelt favors equalized tariff and trade treaties the socialist platform was pre sented by dresher who said that his was the only party with enough progressive measures to be capable of meeting the basic issue of the campaign he said that although the democratic party has some progressive measures it has actual ly done nothing progressive in the past in search for an answer to shakespeare's famous question what's in a name the brown and white reporter pored over the 1,312 undergraduate and 226 fac ulty names listed in the new uni versity directory and tabulated his findings the first thing he noticed was that for the 1,312 undergraduates listed there were only 949 surnames listed in the directory as is usually the case there are more smiths listed than any other name in the present directory there are 12 of them no two of whom have the same home addess the miller's come a close second nine men answering here when the name is called in the univer sity roll and eight men answer to davis six coopers in list six men answer when either cooper or taylor or williams is called and there are 23 groups of three men and 108 groups of two students who have the same last names the fact that many last names are derived from occupational class ifications is illustrated by this list — bishop parsons shepard baker brewer cook miller smith pot ter wagoner taylor cooper wheeler and porter other similar derivations are indicated by dean provost duke king jester squier marshall danser and singer presidents represented seven men on the campus carry names of former presidents of the united states — pierce taylor lin coln johnson taft wilson and harding in the colors we find brown and white as well as black gold silver gray and greene and coffey an austin a ford and a stutz climb over our hill daily and sound effects are provided by a barker a bayer a bray and a howells we continue through the list al ways looking for the unusual and finding the names of places ani mals birds and objects where we had thought to find only students finally we spot our own name in print and hastily close the book with mr shakespeare's quotation on our lips after all what is in a name bethle.hem pa tuesday november 8
