writer lehigh students em oiled in the college of business and economics can no longer pur sue a double major this rule has been clearly stat ed in the college's rules and prac tices manual for years but as of this year the rule is being enforced enforcing the rule was a fac ulty decision and they want it enforced said joan desalvatore associate dean and director of the undergraduate program of the business college a letter to the editor in last tuesday's issue of the brown and white accused desalvatore who came to lehigh seven months ago of being solely responsible for this decision students not being allowed to double major in the business school has been a rule that has been stated clearly for quite some time actually years desalvatore said it is not a new policy but the decision to enforce it is what's new students who have declared a double major before this academ ic year can continue with their multiple studies but as of now declaring a second major will not be approved desalvatore is in the process of working with faculty to create business school concentrations a concentration would require less credits than a major and include anywhere from three to five classes depending on the specifics of the concentration having a double major wasn't in the best interest of the students it created an illusion for them economics department chair tom hyclak said hopefully now students will try to take a broader array of classes not just focus on the ones that are required the college is not prohibiting students from completing require ments for as many majors as they choose to complete the business school wid recognize and verify all extra courses on transcripts and resumes but more than one major cannot go on file in addition the diploma for the college of business and economics does not include a major on it the only place it exists is on transcripts economics professor robert thornton does not think that stu dents will be negatively affected by the ban of a double major students think that this rule is a great advantage that is being taken away from them he said but in fact students can still take the courses necessary to receive a de facto major economics professor mary deily agrees with thornton your major does not appear on your diploma she said but a letter and a resume can provide all the class information you need majors are not as important as they seem when you first hear them by reinforcing the rule the business college hopes to pre vent students from overwork ing themselves and not retain ing all the information from their classes they also hope to reduce strain on the college itself by lowering the amount of students per class reinforcing the rule will encourage students to be more wlvr revamps after ulrich move by andrew rosenbloom news writer starting its second year in the new studio in the ulrich student center the wlvr radio station has developed a new schedule of student-run shows that its listeners can now sample online the studio featuring profes sional-grade furniture equip ment and acoustically designed sound-proof walls was built with university budget funding as well as a large contribution from the wlvr club the studio was built from the ground up and will allow the sta tion to grow into the future station manager aj fritz said b&wpholo by john mcdonough fritz formerly of wzzo and host of the popular wlvr show fritz rocks heads up the wlvr staff which is comprised of both students and community members most college radio stations have a staff that runs the station and leaves only limited responsibilities to students students have more control at wlvr wlvr is unique in that it is during the semester totally student run fritz said there are approximately 60 student members of wlvr most of who work as on-air jockeys the rest of the wlvr wlvr is taking advantage of new equipment this semester with a new schedule it hopes will attract more listeners zoellner up forge new relationship by david webster news writer performing artists like pete yorn will grace the stage of zoellner this year thanks to a newly founded cooperation between zoellner arts center and university productions up president kasia voychick 04 said that the relationship began when up approached zoellner about bringing the musi cal rent to lehigh after than zoellner began approaching up about other shows the primary change this year has been in communica tion said deborah sacarakis the director of programming and outreach for zoellner university productions has enabled us to make a stronger and more direct connection with the student body helping us keep our eyes and ears attuned to the students up is full of creative and progressive thinking people and since we have joined forces with them we have been able to make a larger impact as a whole than we would as individuals as a result of up and zoellner's collaboration shows such as rent which begins in january 2004 have already sold out the most noticeable results of up and zoellner's teamwork will be seen in the new pop-cul ture face of this year's edge events - shows that are a bit more eclectic and off-center than typical lehigh produc tions unlike our edge events of the past this year's shows have without a doubt a more pop culture tone sacarakis said this year we are featuring artists like danny hoch and pete yorn who represent pop-culture which is a significant component of our society up and zoellner feel they have mutually benefited from their new relationship and they are equally excited about this year's three edge events which offer students discounted tickets to featured artists such as poet sekou sundiata hip-hop the ater dramatist hoch and pop artist yorn we were really excited that zoellner wanted to take an active effort to gear the shows to the students voychick said the cooperation works benefi cially for both groups involved we can put on larger more extravagant shows which is our biggest
