the brown and whtie lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 4 tuesday september 16 2003 all the lehigh news first second robbery reported by anthony brichta news editor and john misinco managing editor online a male lehigh student and a female friend were robbed at knifepoint at the intersection of packer and birkel avenues at approximately 1 a.m sunday in a campus safety bulletin issued sunday chief of police edward shupp said five suspects demanded money and a wallet from the victims the suspects then fondled the woman there were no physical injuries reported according to shupp the sus pects were described to be about 16 years old and black or hispanic sunday's attack is the second off-campus robbery reported with in a week brown and white editors attempted to speak with the bethlehem police sunday but were denied access to public police logs after initially being handed the police logs by the desk sergeant the lieutenant on duty demanded that the editors return the logs the lieutenant said that because the brown and white is a student newspaper the police department would not release information contained in the logs even though that information is public many off-campus students said the recent robberies warrant increased police patrols i feel like a more active police role during the night would put residents at ease delta sigma fhiuuzzi news wntel a dedication ceremony to formalize the umoja house's new location on the hill took place saturday the house which was previ ously located in warren square now occupies die former phi delta theta house president gregory farrington vice provost john smeaton and assistant dean of multicultural affairs stephan coggs were joined in celebra tion by 64 lehigh alumni of color along with university administrators from the late 1980s and early 19905 the master of ceremonies for the event was kashi johnson 94 an assistant theater professor and former president of the umoja house umoja is a place for us to call home johnson said we are united to integrate con sciousness of african and latino cultures along with its relocation the ceremony also celebrated umoja's commitment to diversi ty since 1989 the year the house was established umoja was ated by both the administration and then student leon caldwell with its new location the umoja house can give its occupants a common living area where they can work along side one another to learn each other's different cultures lifestyles and experi ences there are about 23 stu dents who live in the house farrington's words at the cer emony were passionate as he spoke of the house's relocation student members of the genesis gospel choir perform during saturday's official dedication of the new umoja house students attend u.n conference by nur e rahman and jessica glowenski editorial pages editor assistant news editor the global union had a busy week last week the organization traveled with four members to the united nations monday sponsored a discussion on u.s british relations wednesday and also invited a speaker to share her experiences as an eyewitness to the attack on the pentagon last thursday students visit united nations four students accompanied by global union director bill hunter represented the university for yet another year at the united nations non-governmental organizations conference chris janneck graduate stu dent lindsay nelsen 06 marina liokumovich 05 and josh brickman 05 traveled to the united nations sept 8 to spend the day attending lectures presented by different organiza tions liokumovich said that being able to attend an international conference was exciting and edu cational lehigh was the only universi ty present at the conference more than 300 organizations were present to discuss current issues and to plan for future pro grams and solutions lehigh chaplain dr doyd steffan led one of the sessions del egates at the conference attended students sat on the floor of the general assembly room and heard speeches from the former president of brazil assistant secretary general louise frechette and parliament and cabinet members shashi tharoor who came to speak at lehigh three years ago was the master of ceremonies for the morning events liokumovich also the secre tary of the global union said that she was most impressed by the access granted to the stu dents as part of this conference and the number of conference members who were in their national garb the conference is held every year by the department of public information u.s.-british relations discussed according to speaker george coyne history professor at the university of kent in england during the brown bag lunch wednesday the tense relations between the united states and britain that have been present since last year may be a return to our standard relationship with our neighbors across the pond coyne maintained that the special relationship between the two countries that was declared by winston churchill after wwii is largely fictitious and that americans and the british have been critical of each other throughout most of history coyne said that while britain see umoja page 6 see
