the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 11l no 3 friday september 12 2003 details surface in student robbery by tucker hottes senior online writer david skeie and gary sutton 03 were walking home from a friend's house on hillside avenue around 2:45 a.m last friday morn ing they turned on to carlton avenue where they were approached by two men demand ing money at first i kind of shrugged it off and we started to walk away skeie said then one of them pulled out a glock nine and point ed it at me sideways skeie showed the men that he only had 2 in his wallet skeie described both suspects as being about 6 feet 2 inches high school-aged and hispanic sutton said they were both wearing bandanas over their faces sutton said he showed the sus pects that he had no money and they then asked for the wallets which he and skeie handed over according to sutton the two sus pects then took the wallets and ran at which point he and sutton phoned bethlehem police a campus safety bulletin describing the incident and advising students of safety tips was issued saturday morning the details in the bulletin how ever differ from those contained in the bethlehem police report and the accounts given by skeie and sutton the bulletin said one sus pect was described as black or hispanic and the other was wearing a mask and could not be identified according to the bethlehem c 2003 mapquest the robbery occurred on carlton avenue near the intersection of packer avenue the shaded region indicates university property coggs chosen as assistant dean by jennifer borck news writer after launching a national search to recruit only highly tal ented and qualified candidates stephan coggs has been named the new assistant dean of multicul tural affairs coggs was the director of the alana student center at the university of massachusetts lowell before joining lehigh he has also worked at the university of the pacific as both the director of community involvement and the director of multicultural affairs i saw an incredible opening and even though i wasn't neces sarily looking to relocate i knew that this was an opportunity that i couldn't pass up coggs said dean of students sharon basso said that she is delighted that coggs has chosen to come to lehigh we are absolutely thrilled to have stephan join our staff basso said he is a very experienced professional a team player and he will form positive relationships with lehigh students faculty and staff we are indeed very fortu nate that he has decided to join us coggs said that he is ready for all that lehigh will bring him i plan to make this a long term stay coggs said i am looking forward to implement ing the vision that i have for creating opportunities for stu dents through leadership community involvement and academic excellence one of coggs goals is to create a stronger sense of com munity among students of color he wants students to get involved and take an initiative in leadership opportunities i'm excited to be here and to be a part of the lehigh com munity he said i know that i am taking on a challenging venture but one that i am looking forward to meeting coggs was hired to replace the previous assistant dean cecilia stanton who was hired to hold the position for only one year cecilia was completing her master's degree at lehigh and was able to provide great lead ership for the office during this transitional year until we could launch a national search to fill the assistant dean posi tion on a permanent basis associate dean of students michelle samuels said upon the completion of stanton's master's degree the national search for a new dean was launched students facul ty and staff were able to par sig ep receives buchanan cup by patrick fulton b&wphoto by laina erde assistant news editor the lehigh chapter of sigma phi epsilon fraternity has been awarded the 2003 buchanan cup for excellence in academics ath letics finance and community service the biennial award which is named for former grand president and treasurer edwin buchanan was awarded at this year's grand chapter conclave in san antonio texas it is awarded to chapters that uphold sig ep's ideal of the balanced man gentle man leader scholar and athlete the award comes to lehigh's chapter of sig ep after two years of hard work said michael carey assistant dean of fraternity and sorority affairs they are a hard-working chapter and they've done every thing in their power to achieve this carey said a 25-page maximum applica tion is necessary to become eligi ble for the award included in the report is everything from pictures to grades to budget reports community service office representative carolina hernandez said sig ep's commitment to com munity service is what sets it apart from other fraternities at lehigh they're a reliable group of students hernandez said they come into everything with energy the senior class officers and class gift
