the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 47 friday april 25 2003 all the lehigh news first class of 2007 to be more diverse news writer lehigh is growing as the make-up of the class of 2007 is starting to take shape as far as applicants go we won't really know until may 1 anne marie a secretary in the admissions office said she said there are more than 4,000 applicants up 10 percent from last year she also said approximately 392 students have been offered early admission which is a 20 student increase bruce gardner interim dean of admissions said although he can't be sure which students will make up the class of 2007 for another two weeks he is pretty sure the geographic locations will not be much different from what they are now associate director of admissions ester gonzalez said the new west coast office is helping with recruitment we actually have a west coast representative out there right now doing a lot of recruit ing gonzalez said it's obvi ously easier to drive to lehigh than to fly so i was shocked when eight out of 38 students who showed up for a program here were from the west coast liz schnur 06 said she agrees i think that the people work ing in admissions need to expand our recruitment to places beyond new york new jersey and pennsylvania lehigh would definitely attract more students if they knew that it had a broader base from different areas along with diversifying the school globally comes diversify ing it racially and ethnically diversity has seemingly always been a problem at lehigh jess davidson 06 said when you look around the dorm you see all the same types of faces it's the job of the admissions office to realize this problem and take steps towards j making changes gonzalez said she has taken many steps to do just that we will be able to tell better in two weeks but as of now we are about twenty students ahead of last year gonzalez said five years ago lehigh focused only on african americans and ! latinos now lehigh is evolving j and changing the newest and possibly most j successful program has been the multicultural ambassadors the group includes different j religious affiliations as well as representation from the gay and lesbian community these students are involved in e-mailing prospective stu dents guiding student tours and much more there has also been a new i web site set up with information aimed at helping multicultural students become acquainted with and comfortable with lehigh its focus is toward anyone interested in lehigh with rang ing ethnicities socio-economic backgrounds sexual orientation and religious backgrounds this low amount of diversi j ty is detrimental to our recruit ment efforts said gonzalez the students involved love diversity and are willing to help they are dedicated all the time to their effort the future will be about watching these programs grow and continue to succeed b&w photo byjohn misinco sarah youssef 03 accepts an award from vice provost for student affairs john smeaton at the student life leadership awards students honored at awards banquet by jocelyn raskin by john misbstco news editor more than 50 seniors and juniors were recognized monday evening at the annual student life leadership awards award recipients and their families were treated to a recep tion followed by dinner in the wood dining room at lacocca hall top award winners this year included jon-paul matychak 03 recipient of the bosey reiter leadership cup and anne tierney 03 recipient of the university service award the bosey reiter leadership cup is given to a senior whose leadership is defined chiefly in terms of moral character the university service award is given to seniors who devote an extraordinary amount of time to serving fellow stu dents and the university com munity matychak served as presi dent of student senate is web master of the lehigh live web site and serves as sports director for campus radio station wlvr campus technology to be upgraded by david webster and ellen lempeur news writers upgrades to lehigh's public computing sites are scheduled for the summer of 2003 we want to bring in faster computers with bigger hard drives more memory and more media support said gale fritsche library and technology services team leader for client services the upgrade plan is expect ed to be carried out during a three year period no sites used by students should be more than three years old said bruce taggart vice provost of library and technology services taggart initiated a three-year life cycle plan for public sites to ensure that lehigh will have the most up-to-date technology the updating process is an ongoing cycle fritsche said what we do is implement a three-year plan and we do one third of the sites a year lehigh now has more than 18 public computing sites the 2003 summer upgrades will affect five of these sites which house more than 141 computers lehigh's technology advan cement plan has two objec tives the first is to configure the current public computing sites to take advantage of technologi cal advances our applications list is con stantly growing and we need the technology to keep up fritsche said the second aim of the improvements is to make the public computers a more cost effective and reliable means of storage among the most notable improvements to be made are the installation of front-mounted usb ports the updated units will all have front usb ports which will be capable of supporting usb keys fritsche said these keys can hold 128 megabytes of information they will probably be available at the bookstore next year for about 30 to 60 aside from the addition of the new usb ports lehigh's three-year plan will also phase out and replace all zip drives at the public computing sites cdrws will be standard in these systems as will dvd players fritsche said see banquet page 4 see tech page 4 men's baseball loses to perm 5-1 racks up sixth loss out of nine see story on page 28 sports 21-28 women's lacrosse 21 patriot league 27 john trenge 28 english class creates film exploring social issues from unique perspectives see story on page 3 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 new b&w editors police reports 6 year-end wrap-up fea turing snow campus speakers gold plus pos sible decline in greek life and more see story on page 9 lifestyle 9-16 first person 10 dear morgan 11 matter of opinion 15 qgg george washington grew marijuana in his garden source www.amusingfacts.com
