the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 44 tuesday april 15 2003 all the lehigh news first weather dampens greek week by julie orchier snow rain cold weather cancel many of week's scheduled activities events news writer many planned greek week events had to be cancelled or modified due to last week's weather mother nature has not cooperated with greek week this year assistant dean of fraternity and sorority affairs michael carey said everyone wanted and tried hard for the events to go off but we can't control the weather and we just can't build a new build ing of the 10 events scheduled for this year's greek week only three actually took place the rest of the events were all can celled due to four continual days of rain preceded by snow on monday what most students don't know is that we have done every thing in our power not to cancel the events we just can't compro mise the students safety carey said in the past rained-out events were relocated to lower grace hall this year howev er the building is under con struction the athletic depart ment had worked with the greek affairs office to allow events to be hosted in their facilities but because of the construction the athletic department also has limited space and all remaining facili ties were booked as well athletics has been very stingy about letting us use their space this year said adam baughman 03 the interfraternity council greek week chairman and member of phi sigma kappa fraternity carey said that moving an event poses significant prob lems logistically to move an event from a parking lot to a building takes more work effort and planning than most think he said this is why we have waited until the very last minute to cancel an event the only actual venues available as a backup when it rains are academic spaces however ample problems arise with the use of these buildings we have to be careful using academic space it is not as easy as it seems to organize carey said problems with using aca demic buildings include fire hazards and classes in session throughout the building as well as a variety of other safety issues other alternatives have been brought up in regards to rescheduling the events one idea is to try reschedule the events later this week carey however makes no promises for this plan with the two holidays next week passover and easter many students and faculty will be going home to celebrate the holidays with their family so there isn't much time next week carey said the days are growing thin another suggestion was to hold events the last week of classes due to complaints from professors in previous years the greek affairs office is respecting their requests to sundaze entertains at new location by blair tapper assistant news editor hundreds of lehigh stu dents along with music fans convened in the lacocca hall parking lot on the mountaintop campus saturday afternoon for sundaze the annual event which marks the end of greek week is sponsored by university productions sundaze features live music games and food i know sundaze is supposed to be the end of an amazing greek week and even though a lot of greek the band ok go performs saturday before a packed crowd at sundaze the annual festival was moved to the lacocca hall parking lot due to recent rains which left sayre field muddy robbery hits campus wednesday greg meyer by patrick fulton and news writer one robbery and one attempted robbery occurred on asa drive late wednesday evening the victims in both incidents were males walking alone in the area between campus square and the fairchild martindale library both were approached by three to four unarmed males who attempted to steal the vic tims backpacks police said neither victim suffered injuries as a result of the struggles police believe the two inci dents are related the robbery and attempted robbery both occurred between 10 p.m and 10:30 pm the total amount of stolen property is esti mated at around 190 a full police report was filed on thursday police are not at liberty to say exacdy where the victims were coming from or where they were going when the incidents occurred campus police and the bethlehem police department have stepped up security on and around campus following the incidents campus police are patrolling various areas on campus while bethlehem police are monitor ing areas along the perimeter when asked about the extra security measures campus police chief edward shupp said he was not at liberty to comment i'm not going to divulge how many extra patrols and how often they were there shupp said criminals read papers too students are urged to avoid walking alone at night and to make use of the university's shuttle service tracs and the escort walking service whenever possible campus police are investigat ing the incidents we're investigating it at this time trying to make a determi nation as to what is happening shupp said assistant news
