the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 41 friday april 4 2003 all the lehieh news first rotc program gains popularity by james douglass news writer the reserve officer training corps rotc has been a fix ture on the asa packer campus for nearly a decade the program is designed to commission lieutenants in the united states army upon graduation the cadets have three options in which to enter upon graduation active duty national guard or army reserves the steel battalion rotc program is funded joindy by the federal govern ment and lehigh the amount of funding granted toward the program is direcdy linked to the amount of students involved the program which is based in coxe laboratory serves over a dozen colleges and community colleges in the lehigh valley although the university's budget for rotc has remained relatively the same for the last 7 years we are working closely with lehigh to ensure its rotc program con tinues to be sufficiently resourced to retain its status as one of the best in the nation said captain wade johnson who is in charge of admissions and enrollment for the pro gram johnson said he would like to see the program expand in the future we would like additional funding for different things he said our funding has been at the same steady rate for several years now scholarships are one reason the program is popular among participants several scholar ships are available for rotc cadets to choose from the largest offering 20,000 per year with 600 allotted for books the scholarship carries with it a four-year commit ment of service for the army cadets are given anywhere from 250 to 400 per month tax free this money is meant to be spent at their own discre tion the amount of money allotted per month is deter mined by class rank nationally more than 40 percent of rotc cadets receive some amount of schol arship money sixty percent of lehigh participants are grant ed scholarship money this is partially due to lehigh's high cost of tuition but can also be attributed to the high caliber of students within lehigh's program who qualify for more grants there are three ways to become an officer in the army one is to participate in a rotc program while an undergraduate student at an accredited college or universi ty another is to attend the u.s military academy at west point ny it is also pos sible to enlist in the army and then enroll in an officer candidate school or ocs the program will graduate its 84th class this spring it was founded by former lehigh president henry drinker in close collaboration with president woodrow wilson the program is one of the old est in the country lehigh has previously been a host institution to navy and air force rotc programs but both were disbanded in the early 19905 cadets within the program are active on campus with stu dent government varsity athlet ics and various clubs and organ celebration of library's founding by farhana kassimali news writer there will be a commemo ration of the 125 th anniver sary of the library's opening this wednesday from 4 p.m to 5:30 p.m in linderman library students and faculty are invited to stop by the library this week before the event to sign the giant birthday card placed in the lobby people signing the card can write their favorite memories about the library people signing the card receive free t-shirts those who wear their shirts to the birthday party will receive another gift and be eligible for other raffle prizes sue cady director of administration and planning for library and technology services said that the cele bration was set for april 9 for two reasons april 25 is at the end of the semester and next week is national library week the library was dedicated in 1878 the building is unique with its stained glass skylight spiral staircase and gothic details linderman library houses books reports and journals in the humanities and b&w photo by marisa brjckman linderman library celebrates its 125 th year in operation this year a birthday card is available for all to sign in the library stanton calls for diverse campus by maura kutner news writer assistant dean of students for multicultural affairs cecilia stanton told students that increasing diversity among the student body is necessary for lehigh's future stanton led a discussion in perella auditorium tuesday about the importance of achieving a more diverse and tolerant campus the lecture was the first of a series of events that will occur this week as part of diversity awareness week my purpose is to share my views with you but also to give you a forum to talk about some topics that we may all whisper about behind closed doors but rarely have the opportunity to talk openly about stanton said if we are to discuss controversial topics we have to be willing to move out of our comfort zone so if you begin to feel uncomfortable then i am doing what i set out to do stanton addressed a room of students about the problems people on campus face when interacting with one another when we think about diversity we tend to focus on race stanton said we judge others based on the color of their skin but also by the style of their dress their age their weight we make assumptions about their sexu al orientation about their views and we judge others according to our expectations of them stanton allowed students to participate in the discus sion by reading quotes from the daily jolt a popular online gossip forum for lehigh students students were given the opportunity to respond to these statements once stanton had read them aloud one statement read diversity on campus is ideally a good idea but causes far more problems than it's worth with a homogenous student body lehigh students have more in common with each other and less racial tension in response to the state ment one student said that even if racial diversity were nonexistent on this campus see rotc page 5
