the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 39 friday march 28 2003 all the lenten news first rotc graduate killed in kuwait byjohnmisinco news editor the death of army capt christopher scott seifert early sunday hit the lehigh commu nity hard seifert 27 was killed in a grenade attack believed to be committed by a fellow soldier a moravian college gradu ate seifert was a member of lehigh's rotc class of 1997 bob wolfenden director of alumni education was head of the military science department from 1995 to 1999 seifert then a sophomore met with him to inquire about the program and wolfenden encouraged him to join he was one of the best we've ever commissioned out of the program wolfenden said this is a huge loss that is hard to cope with after meeting with wolf enden in 1995 seifert went to camp challenge in fort knox ky where potential cadets learn more about the rotc program to see if they are inter ested seifert was not only interest ed he did so well that the army offered him a scholarship wolfenden said wolfenden said that seifert's parents were initially concerned about their son's desire to join the military but supported him completely during his senior year in the rotc seifert attained the rank of cadet battalion operations offi cer one of the top positions in the program his responsibilities included developing training plans for rotc cadets after graduating seifert became a military intelligence officer the suspect in seifert's death sgt asan akbar 31 of the 326th engineer battalion was shipped to a military jail in germany on tuesday after a judge found probable cause to try him he will await a pretrial investigation seifert a member of the 101st airborne division was stationed at camp pennsylvania in kuwait near the iraqi border he was killed and 15 other members of the ist brigade combat team were injured early sunday morning when akbar either threw or rolled three grenades into three tents according to a statement released by fort campbell headquarters of the 101st airborne division a second soldier air force maj gregory stone 40 died tuesday from injuries he suf fered in the attack news of seifert's death came as a shock to those who knew him best wolfenden who commis sioned seifert upon graduation and worked with him closely during his senior year remem bered his sense of humor chris was a smart guy and he always had a smile on his face he said he was well respected by everyone who met him ralph gabriel an adminis trative associate for the chemi cal engineering department was one of seifert's rotc instructors gabriel described seifert as a model student chris was your basic ail american guy gabriel said militarily he was real top notch and excelled at everything he did you wish you could have all students like chris wolfenden described the close relationship between seifert and three of his friends from the rotc greg soule joel kostlac and roy beeson the four known as the four musketeers were the four top cadets by rank soule was a lieu tenant colonel and seifert army captain christopher scott seifert emergency plan includes web site by greg meyer news writer in a web page entitled lehigh in time of war includes campus news and events related to the war with iraq such as information on a war anxiety support group for students who know people stationed overseas the group's first meeting was held tuesday at 8 p.m in the women's center and subsequent meetings are to take place week there are also links to various support services on campus including the counseling center and tips for students parents alumni faculty and staff to stay safe and healthy during wartime the site suggests that anxiety levels can be lowered by limiting exposure to news reports perhaps only checking in briefly at the top of the hour it also instructs every one to have a family disaster plan in case an emergency situation arises and to keep in touch with family and 20 sophomores 17 jun iors and 12 seniors who will graduate this spring they will receive commisions to the army no current lehigh rotc cadets will be heading to the confrontation in iraq accord ing to william d kuchinski a lieutenant colonel of aviation and professor of military sci ence and leadership kuchinski did however explain that rotc students have military commitments after graduation that
