the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 36 all the lehieh news first friday march 7 2003 students travel to u.n meet iraqi ambassador by nur-e rahman editorial pages editor twelve students traveled to new york city monday morning to meet iraqi ambassador mohammed al-douri the students became the first university group to meet with the diplomat and question the intentions of his government students were able to meet with the ambassador for nearly two hours as he lectured about iraqi foreign policy and history before opening the floor for questions do the americans have the right to change the iraqi regime al-douri said the charter of the united nations prohibits any intervention of internal affairs of any other country students who came from various majors and ethnic back grounds were quick to pick up on the ambassador's tendency to diplomatically avoid any allega tions of wrong-doing on iraq's part the ambassador denied accu sations that iraq used chemical weapons against its own people in 1988 but admitted that iraq photo courtesy of associated press has weapons of mass destruction while claiming that they have never denied the possession of the weapons bill hunter director of the office of international students and scholars organized the trip as an opportunity for students to be able to hear the other side of the story from as close to the source as possible the ambassador saw an opportunity to connect with young americans who will in future years help to shape mohammed al-douri iraqi ambassador to the united nations talks with students at his office in new york city on monday three arrested in campus drug bust by tucker hottes assistant news lditor three lehigh students were arrested tuesday on charges of the sale and delivery of illegal drugs police chief edward shupp said stephen dominguez 03 daniel brosk 03 and michael german 04 sold in excess of 3,000 in marijuana to under cover police officers shupp said german is a member of phi sigma kappa fraternity a house member who answered the phone wednesday evening refused to comment on the situation in a campus-wide e-mail sent tuesday vice provost for student affairs john smeaton said the three students are believed to have been a major source of illegal drugs on cam pus we've got some of the major players shupp said the police report said dominguez and brosk sold more than 3,000 of marijuana to undercover officers on three occasions although shupp said the amount was higher police said german sold offi cers marijuana he allegedly obtained from dominguez and brosk ballots signed during student strike by kathrin klenshteyn news writer hundreds of ballots were signed on campus wednesday as part of a national books not bombs national student strike the strike was designed to protest a possible war against iraq tables with ballots for stu dents to sign were set up in the ulrich student center rauch business center rathbone hall the university center and maginnes hall the strike offi cially started at kenner theater in ulrich at 1 p.m the ballots will be sent to government officials the strike was called and coordinated by the national youth and student peace coalition the coalition was formed after the sept 11 terrorist attacks and has tried to build student and youth opposition to war the nysp includes 17 organ izations including the muslim student association of the united states and canada and the united states student association more than 300 universities across the country participated in the strike wednesday ashley johnson 04 helped coordinate the strike at lehigh we've got a lot of support for this and it shows because we've got hundreds of ballots out there johnson said jim goodley 05 a member of the progressive student alliance said he hopes the strike will garner support for increased education spending we'd like to create more awareness about the situation but also we'd like to give people a voice so that they can say whether they support more military or education spending goodley said students participating in the strike demanded that the federal government include enough funding in its budget to allow everyone in the country free access to higher education demonstrators called for the re-allocation of military funds to eliminate poverty and build peace at home and throughout the world the nysp also called for a repeal of a provision in the federal no child left behind act the provision requires any local edu cational agency receiving funding under the act to give basic student information to military and col lege recruiters who ask for it secondary school students or their parents may request to have their information withheld strikers demanded that the lehigh administration formally declare opposition to the war in a message posted on the daily campus e-mail bulletin tuesday organizers said they also wanted the university to dis close and eliminate
