the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 34 all the lehigh news first friday february 28 2003 morning call recognizes hawks by greg meyer local paper decides to use mascot name for first time in seven years news writer seven years after the moun tain hawk mascot made its first appearance at goodman sta dium the last remaining media holdout has decided to comply with lehigh's request to use the nickname in its publications the morning call was the last newspaper to make the switch according to jeff tourial director of sports media relations it was actually the brown and white that began referring to all sports teams as the mountain hawks in the fall of 1997 tourial said he said that most national and regional media followed soon after president gregory farrington said he met with the new editor in chief and publisher at a game last fall while farrington said he personally did not make any prior requests to the morning call he didn't mention at that time that the paper was still using the old nickname it's only appropriate that the local paper call our teams by the correct name farrington said the fact is our teams are called mountain hawks all we ask is that the paper respect that according to the morning call past editors didn't feel the need to start using the new nick name because lehigh had not enacted an official policy requir ing them to do so lehigh has not instituted an official policy aside from listing the name in the media guide and has said an official policy is unnecessary if it's good enough for the new york times and good enough for the philadelphia inquirer it's good enough for the morning call farrington said the media guide that lehigh publishes lists three nicknames the brown and white the engineers and the mountain hawks the morning call has taken this to mean that they may use any name they choose despite repeated requests from lehigh's administration to use the new nickname when refer ring to current teams and ath letes tourial said the reason for the three nicknames is because alumni who played before 1996 will always be identified as engineers he said lehigh's position is that all current athletes and teams should be referred to as mountain hawks i'm sure there are some stu dent athletes on campus now that prefer the engineers nick name tourial said but the vast majority of lehigh student athletes today identify them selves as mountain hawks tourial said individual teams do have the right to choose the nickname they will use all athletic teams have used the mountain hawk name since the wrestling team adopted the name in the fall of 1997 rushdie speaks at baker after exile by maura kutner news writer after spending more than ten years hiding from a virtual death sentence salman rushdie one of the world's most controversial writers spoke about his experience in exile and shared his views on religion culture and politics at baker hall rushdie engaged an audi ence of nearly 1,000 people tuesday night about the cur rent state of the world and about the future of civilization rushdie is best known for his controversial book the satanic verses published in 1988 the book indirectly con demned certain aspects of islam and received severe crit icism most specifically from ayatollah ruhollah khomeini then supreme leader of iran shortly after the book was published khomeini accused rushdie of blaspheming islam and issued a fatwa or reli gious edict condemning rushdie to death for the criti cisms presented in the book living under the threat of death rushdie's period of exile officially lasted until september 1998 when the iranian government announc ed that it was formally dissas sociating itself from the reli gious edict against fails news writer six months after bethlehem began responding to all fire alarms on campus the new pol icy seems to be standing the test of time only minor adjustments have altered the regulations since the beginning of the year changes that have been made are largely a result of decisions to relax rather than tighten measures the most notable modifica tion is the reduced number of fire trucks arriving at the scene of false fire alarms and other minor fire-related disturbances a change that has caught the attention of several students it used to be a big huge deal when an alarm went off said amy yurgalevicz 04 a member of pi beta phi sorority fire trucks used to come every time i actually don't think i saw any trucks the last time an alarm was pulled i think the whole intensity of the policy has definitely fizzled the loosened standard has some students concerned about safety with the decreased secu rity it doesn't seem very safe that they only use one fire truck said kathryn erb 06 a resident at dravo house what if there's a real fire police chief edward shupp attributes this easing of meas ures to a more efficient coordi nation between the fire depart ment and campus police since the university has added extra police cars on campus the police can reach the scene more quickly and inform the fire department of any need for assistance a full fleet of fire personnel has there fore become unnecessary safety is key shupp said we've reached a happy medi um where we don't have to use every car and vehicle but we're still making sure we do everything we need to shupp cited potential safety hazards and practical issues sur rounding the arrival of an entire convoy of fire trucks with each alarm as further reasons for cut ting back the numbers see rushdie page 3 see
