the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 33 tuesday february 25 2003 all the lehigh news first group tours pentagon al jazeera by nur-e rahman students given special access to tour defense department media headquarters editorial pages editor bill hunter director of the office of international students and scholars took students on a trip to washington d.c which included tours of the pentagon and the new al-jazeera branch headquarters imagine walking down an office hallway that is frequented by secretary of defense donald rumsfeld and then within an hour walking around a news room that will soon be the gate way of information from the united states to 40 million viewers in the middle east with the possibility of a war with iraq looming on the horizon seven lehigh students were given the opportunity friday to have an eye-opening political experience organized by die university students eamon aloyo 03 akwete bortei-doku 05 ben wong 04 pre-freshman student ika akalili rahman and gradu ate students sandhya eswaran and prakhar prakash left the university at 5:30 a.m and engaged in a day of hands-on education hunter who in part organ ized the trip said he believes experiences and learning oppor tunities that introduce students to views they may not have oth erwise encountered is an excel lent teaching tool the trip was organized with a tour of the defense department followed by a tour of the pre mier news network serving the middle east the pentagon in an effort to heighten security has made it increasingly more difficult for foreign nationals to enter the premises for reasons other than government business through the office of public relations and a special effort on behalf of the university many lehigh students who were citi zens of different nations were able to take the tour the students were led through analysis the students included american citizens and foreign nationals graduate and under graduates from various majors and backgrounds snow removal proves difficult task by chris morgan news writer twenty-four inches of snow fell on lehigh's campus last weekend and with 1,600 acres it takes more than shovels to clear south mountain working almost continuously since the last snow flakes fell facil ities services and several snow removal contractors have been shoveling plowing and removing snow to clear the campus three separate contractors have been hired to assist in clearing out different areas of campus the brickman group and valley excavating are responsible for using heavy machinery to clear the roads and parking lots while the task of manually clearing sidewalks and stairways falls to aj trunzo inc although the massive amounts of snow are slowing the campus down many stu dents don't seem to mind i couldn't find any parking on lower campus on wednesday but by thursday i didn't really have a problem derek zawacki 05 said chad dolgin 06 who does not have a car on campus found he had to leave for classes ten min utes earlier than usual i did slip a few times on the stairs but overall getting to class was all right he said the contractor responsible for clearing the roads and park ing lots valley excavating has been using pickup trucks with front-end plows and backhoes in addition valley excavating dump trucks and front-end loaders which are the large tired trucks with scoops have recently been seen on campus fifteen different heavy machin ery vehicles have been used to help clear away the snow said equip ment operator skip michael i've been moving snow at lehigh since 1991 and this is the most snow i've seen yet michael said i can tell you it's going to be a bad winter every major parking lot on packer campus including frater nities sororities and residential halls has to be cleared after a major snowfall roads are the first priority and work begins as soon as the storm ends usually park ing services with the assistance of campus police will block the parking lot being excavated while program encourages discussion by diana zborovsky news writer a new reading program on the same page is being put into full swing at lehigh the new program encour ages faculty students commu nity members and even alumni to all read the same book and then participate in discussions about it the book chosen to start off the program is city of light by lauren belfer the author will come to join a dis cussion at linderman library april 1 the program is sponsored by library and technology services as part of the 125 th anniversary celebration of linderman library city of light address es issues such as the impact of technology on society gender and class relationships and indi vidual integrity b&wpholo by tom steele two students read books
