the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 32 friday february 21 2003 all the lehigh news first reckless drivers cause concern by nancy kanetsky news writer a car that hit and injured a student pedestrian near moravian college last month has raised concerns about pedestrian safety at lehigh police chief edward shupp however said there should be no cause for con cern this comes as a surprise he said we haven't had any reports of pedestrian accidents in a while i didn't realize there was a problem neither campus police nor the health center could con firm that any students were struck by cars on campus however that doesn't mean pedestrian accidents aren't a major problem on campus a report that a professor was recently struck by a car on campus was confirmed by the health center michael frisch a junior at northwestern university vis ited his cousin at lehigh in early december while jog ging near the bookstore he was hit by a jeep although he was rushed to the hospital he suffered no major injuries and was released the same day the experience will make me more cautious when i run but the way the roads are set up in bethlehem and around lehigh katie breckenridge along with the senior class officers conducted the search russert has spoken with many of the most important fig ures of the 21st century breckenridge said he is one of the most speaker who would please everyone our main objective was to find someone that not only stu dents will find exciting but also their families she said the idea is to keep everybody happy president gregory farrington said russert's selection fits in with the university's objective of encouraging students to be open-minded and informed russert has a distinct per spective on the world into which we are sending our graduates farrington said our students learn that having a global per spective asking the right ques tions and being a great listener are critical skills for success class secretary jessica mouravieff said the search for a commencement speaker began late last spring when the officers met with a faculty committee and began generating names the officers then met on their own to come up with additional choices afterward each officer researched approximately five of the candidates they brought their research back to the next meeting and discussed it with the faculty committee some names were added others crossed off and the officers re researched everyone remaining on the revised list next the search committee narrowed its list down to 20 choices at that point the search corn tim russert mittee's work was complete and the list was handed over to vice president for administrative and tuition increase announced by kathrin klenshteyn tuition for 2003-04 school year will rise 4.8 percent news writer last week's notification about next year's tuition increase has raised a lot of eyebrows around campus in a campus-wide e-mail president gregory farrington and provost roland yoshida said the university is trying to keep rates as low as possible we know that no one ever likes an increase in costs farrington said we have worked very hard to manage the university budget efficiently so as to restrain annual increases in the cost of attending lehigh the annual announcement of a tuition increase is not new to the university tuition for the 2002-03 school year was increased 1,040 to a total of 25,980 the amount of the increase is higher than the average rate of inflation according to pan american life inflation in the united states has averaged about 3 percent the past several decades the extra 1,250 per student generated by the increase which is equivalent to a total of 6,250,000 is needed to fund new academic programs tech nology infrastructure improve friday during the school year in fact we can't remember a time when it did not but 20 inches of snow is enough to change that we braved blizzard-like con ditions to come in and put the paper together sunday after noon but because of the snow storm our printing company was unable to pick up the paper and there was no tuesday issue we apologize
