glowinski news writer when a group of students peppered the campus with martin luther king jr quotes and peace slogans written in chalk this semester they were hoping to turn some heads they succeeded but passers by cared more about where they had written their messages than the point they were trying to get across this semester the chalk-writ ing moved beyond the side walks as people scrawled their messages on buildings and other structures across campus most notably messages were written on the inside and outside walls of the university center and ulrich student center the steps and inside door of coxe lab and the patio of packer chapel dean of students sharon basso said that her office was flooded with dozens of calls and e-mails in response to the writing they didn't appreciate other folks doing that to their community she explained it just didn't look nice they wrote on things that shouldn't have been written on according to campus police chief edward shupp writing on campus buildings constitutes criminal mischief intentional ly defacing or otherwise damag ing tangible public or private property technically this would also apply to sidewalks on campus but shupp noted that writing on a building garners more attention because it's much harder to clean chalk off the side of a building in fact it sometimes requires the use of a power washer which can cost hundreds of dollars whether a person caught writing on a building would be arrested or fined is up to the individual police officer shupp said every situation is different he said the officer is going arts center chalk-writing has appeared in numerous spots around campus kazaa downloads exceed bandwidth by patrick fulton assistant news editor the recording industry of america and the motion picture association of america have issued 17 cease and desist orders to lehigh due to excessive ille gal downloading of copyrighted material the issue was first raised at tuesday's student senate meeting we're taking these cease and desist orders very seriously and are contacting the students involved said vice provost of library and technology services bruce taggart while individual students are the culprits the university was contacted because lehigh owns the ip address the two programs most responsible for this excessive downloading by students are kazaa and morpheus two pop ular methods of obtaining audio and video files a wired policy for student internet use states that students who use more than half a giga byte in a 24-hour period will have their bandwidth reduced for 72 hours several students download as much as five to 10 gigabytes of material per day by comparison the e-mail system for the entire campus only uses about one to two giga bytes per day beginning next fall enhanced network switching equipment will allow a particular student's bandwidth to be limited within 12 hours of downloading exces sive amounts of material currendy an offender's band width must be limited manually in addition the university plans to adjust bandwidth by next fall 60 percent of commodi ty bandwidth will go to residence halls and 40 percent will go to offices and public sites the pur pose of the adjustment is to free up bandwidth it seems to me the system they are setting up is fair said student senate treasurer matt giusto 03 the residence halls will have the majority of access to the bandwidth but not at the expense of the libraries research facilities and offices on a given day as much as 80 percent of lehigh's band width is used for downloading material from kazaa and morpheus if we were to block kazaa and morpheus all of our band width problems would stop taggart said while these programs will remain available to students stu dents are warned that they should not download more than half a gigabyte of material per day the fact is legally the school will eventually be sued and it says a lot that taggart and the administration are still allowing us to use kazaa or morpheus giusto said most other schools have long since banned such programs a university of oklahoma student found guilty of illegally downloading excessive amounts of copyrighted material is being held on criminal charges the student's computer was confiscated and is being analyzed by computer forensics experts offenders bandwidth is restricted in hopes of keeping a similar situation from occur ring at lehigh it's not just something here at lehigh taggart said it's every where it's on every campus while only 17 cease and desist orders have been issued to lehigh it is estimated that about 150 to 200 students per semester use more bandwidth than they are allowed such high bandwidth usage could potentially slow internet connections for other students when even a small number of students use an excessive amount of bandwidth it detracts from all the rest taggart said each year more classes are professor receives award by liz conroy news writer the department of materials science and engineering has presented professor emeritus alan pense with its distin guished alumni award he was cited for outstand ing teaching and research in physical and mechanical met allurgy and for excellence in leadership and management for the department college and university the award was presented at a luncheon organized by slade cargill chairman of the department and attended by about 30 of pense's friends and colleagues his friends and associates commented on both his ability and his sense of humor he's a very entertaining speaker and teacher besides being a renowned expert in the
