the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 29 tuesday february 4 2003 ah the lehigh news first campus reacts to shuttle disaster by anthony brichta and patrick fulton assistant news editors across campus and through out the world people are mourn ing saturday's columbia space shuttle disaster nasa officials are investigat ing what caused the columbia to break into pieces during its landing approach investigators are taking a par ticularly close look at a mishap during the columbia's launch on jan 16 nasa officials have determined that a piece of foam fell off an external fuel tank dur ing the shuttle's launch striking heat resistant tiles on the columbia's left wing space exploration has inher ent risks and although tragic the columbia disaster highlights the problems that can occur nick knisely professor of physics and astronomy said that the astronauts willingness to accept the risks of space travel is what distinguishes them as national heroes the astronauts lived and died in pursuit of a dream that humankind could someday have a future greater than any of us can imagine knisely said that willingness to risk in pur suit of a dream on behalf of us all is what makes their sacrifice on saturday morning so particu larly heroic gary deleo physics depart ment chairman said the disaster rekindled memories of the space shuttle challenger which exploded during takeoff in january 1986 looking at the faces of the crew brings back memories of my first thoughts when i saw the faces of the astronauts lost on challenger including an african american an asian and both men and women smiling with such kindness and working together so well he said deleo said that after the ini tial shock of the accident set in he became concerned for the future of the space program there are elements of our society that would be happy to see human space travel termi nated and they are certainly willing to use this tragic event to promote their agenda he said i hope that we as a nation do not allow this to happen these astronauts represent all of us who would like to travel in space but who never will knisely said that the people he knows at nasa have always understood the the risks involved the astronauts i imagine b&w photo by amanda macmiijan the flags on the university center front lawn fly at half-staff president bush ordered all flags to be lowered until wednesday in honor of the astronauts who died in the columbia disaster snow removal woes irk students by jocelyn raskin b&wphoto by blake neiman news writer controversy has risen over snow removal proce dures this winter on campus i think we've been doing a good job said richard benner assistant director of grounds for facilities services there haven't been any problems so far and we haven't gotten many com plaints benner categorized this winter as mild with a fair amount of storms he also said that no storm has been too intense making it easier for facilities services to stay on top of the snow removal procedures however many students including hedy kishel 06 said that this has been one of the worst winters in a while this winter has been awful with an enormous amount of snow kishel said i dread waking up on weekdays because i know i will be dredging through snow to get to class benner said that most storms this winter have had an accumulation of about six inches of snow some winters we have to truck the snow away but there hasn't been that prob lem yet benner said valley excavating is in charge of clearing all campus roads and parking lots while the brickman group removes snow from the goodman and mountaintop campuses aj trunczo a local contrac tor is removing snow on the asa packer campus for the first year however and that is where most of the problems have been benner explained that snow is removed in two ways if the snow begins to fall in the middle of the day i ben kweller 20 of texas performs during the moonlight cafe at lamberton hall saturday night kweller has per formed with dashboard confessionals the strokes and the dave matthews band see reaction page 6 see snow page 6 men's basketball loses to holy cross loses first place see story on page 20 sports 15-20 women's basketball 15 wrestling 16 swimming 20 women's center close to hiring sexual assault prevention coordinator see story on page 5 news 1-6 college news briefs 2 residence hall lottery 4 fraternity rush 6 latest trends in con sumerism examined see story on page 9 business 9-11 price waterhouse 9 business briefs 9 look who's investing 11 a 200-year-old piece of tibetan cheese was auctioned off for 1,513 in 1993 source www.amusingfacts.com
