the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 26 friday january 24 2003 all the lehigh news first local ceremony honors martin luther king jr by nancy kanetsky news writer lehigh students and local residents joined together at st peter's lutheran church in honor of martin luther king jr monday the annual cele bration was sponsored by the office of multicultural affairs the community service office and st peter's church the event marked the beginning of martin luther king jr service week which included various volunteer opportunities this week rev dr albert paul brinson spoke at the celebration brinson was brought to lehigh by dr william scott professor of africana studies brinson who served as assistant pastor to king recalled his experi ences with the king family and honored king's legacy through community service martin luther king was a visionary not a dreamer brinson said his vision that all of us in this world would one day live peacefully brinson went on to discuss his first-hand experiences with king and the events of the civil rights movements in the 19605 brinson made reference to cities such as montgomery b&wphoto by michael hellman ala where blacks staged a boycott of city buses and walked to work until they were given equal rights to ride on buses rosa parks did not intend to start a movement she was just tired remarked brinson brinson discussed the peace ful demonstrations that took place in birmingham ala king was arrested during one of the demonstrations no one can ride your back unless you're bent said brinson once you stand up straight they fall off the lehigh genesis gospel choir sings at a ceremony honoring martin luther king jr at st peter's lutheran church monday taylor to take hawks to new heights by david frisch he is the only black head coach at a rembrandt white school and he is barely older than the average lehigh gradu ate student billy taylor has turned around the lehigh men's bas ketball program while making breakthroughs on and off the court in his first year as mountain assistant sports editor sports feature hawks head coach the soft spoken 6-foot-5 illinois native has preached to his players the importance of playing in the moment the team seems to have caught on taylor has taken a squad that finished 5-23 last year and led them to a tie for first place in the patriot league with a record of 11-5 and taylor is the first black head coach the men's basketball program has ever had the hawks are 3-0 in league play and stand tied with power house college of the holy cross but this man's story is far more exciting than a few come from-behind victories his team has produced this season this past monday was changes possible as mayor resigns by greg meyer news writer bethlehem mayor don cunningham resigned his posi tion monday to take a job in the rendell administration accord ing to the morning call gov ed rendell has asked cunningham to serve as secre tary for the department of general services in his new cab inet vice provost for student affairs john smeaton said cunningham has always been a proponent of strengthening ties between the university and city he has been a real partner with lehigh to build a better com munity relationship smeaton said mark erickson vice presi dent of administrative and gov ernment affairs said the mayor meets once a month with him and other lehigh officials to discuss city-university relation in addition erickson said ken smith executive director of community and regional affairs attends city council meetings and other events the city holds there's a wonderful sense of shared vision erickson said according to erickson the mayor has been involved in many joint projects with the uni versity including last year's light up the night an event to unveil new victorian streetlights as part of a beautification project for the south side erickson said the university's relationship with the city is not limited to the mayor i think we will continue to move in a positive direction through our connections with the city council he said ai am confident we can maintain the momentum generated on the south side with the new mayor student senate president jp matychak 03 agrees that the mayor's departure will not affect the ongoing push for community relations from both sides i am very optimistic that through
