news editor a former football player has been charged with attempted homicide for allegedly stabbing another man in the throat theo moss 22 an all-patriot league defensive tackle for the 2001 championship team was arrested jan 9 moss is believed to be involved in the dec 27 stab bing of eugene martinez 31 of bethlehem martinez was hos pitalized for more than a week according to the morning call moss was taken into cus tody at his home on the 100 block of east morton street police lt robert righi said moss was later arraigned before senior district justice joseph leo he was then taken to northampton county prison after failing to pay 200,000 bail according to police the stab bing incident spurred from a dis pute over a stolen purse martinez and a friend were allegedly at moss home earlier on the evening of dec 27 moss then discovered that his girl friend's purse and cellular phone were missing later that evening moss saw martinez on a bethlehem street then moss asked martinez to return the stolen items accord ing to police an argument ensued and moss allegedly stabbed martinez in the throat with a nine-inch double edge blade b&wfile photo theo moss group pushes for sexual integration byjohnmisinco news editor as the university attempts to increase diversity on campus several students are trying to increase diversity in the dorm room matt weintraub 04 and members of the student senate facilities and housing committee want the university to consider allowing coed living in apart ment suites such as trembley park and campus square the committee conducted a survey at the end of the fall semester to gauge student reac tion to the idea of 199 students surveyed 177 said they favored the option to live in coed apart ment suites 127 respondents said they would take advantage of the coed option if it were available students are overwhelmingly in favor of the idea weintraub said even if they wouldn't take advantage of the option most students would at least like the ability to choose for themselves weintraub thought of the idea after reading about similar efforts at oberlin college in ohio students there pushed for coed apartment living using the argu ment that heterosexual couples could not live together while same-sex couples could this wasn't my main con cern but it was interesting to see the issue framed from that per spective he said instead weintraub feels expanded coed living would make it easier for students to find roommates they know if i lived in a suite i would be hard pressed to find three other male friends who were not gryphons were not in a fraterni ty and were not living off-cam pus he said weintraub's proposal is still in the early stages b&wphoto by tom steele marisa markowitz 06 and ken adams 03 take time to study at the newly renovated coppee hall the build ing now houses the journalism department the brown and white and the epitome yearbook simulation creates cultural awareness by nur-e rahman assistant news editor a bold new computer simula tion is changing the way stu dents think and react to their social environments director of international students and scholars bill hunter recently created a computer pro gram that allows students to par ticipate in cultural simulations specifically designed to make them feel uncomfortable the program packaged as a one-hour session groups common cultural simulations that are often utilized in staff and faculty train ing programs the purpose of the simulations is to make students experience life from another perspective the simulation program cre ated in part through a grant from the alcoa foundation is believed to be the only one in the nation during the program students are placed in different situations and asked to participate in vari ous activities that allow for a bet ter understanding of cultural dif ferences many of these situa tions provoke a range of emo tions hunter said the program uses only fic tional languages and cultures that do not resemble or enforce stereotypes of any cultural group none of the simulations focus on one culture or stereo type hunter said you can't pick out one culture and think this must be mexican or italian these are completely artificial cultures hunter and his group of trained graduate and undergrad uate student facilitators oversee the programs and discuss the purpose of the simulations with participants i want them to feel awk ward not know how to commu nicate and then try to figure it out he said sometimes they will fail and sometimes they will succeed hunter explained that some of the simulations are similar to an exercise in which students learn a new language in two minutes and have to speak in that language to communicate inevitably problems and diffi culties arise hunter stressed that although these simulations have provoked reactions from students the program is not meant to be a life altering expe rience this simulation won't see coed page 4 see simulation page 5
