the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 23 tuesday november 26 2002 all the lehigh news first fall commencement speaker chosen college of arts and sciences dean carson will address fall graduates by ashley weakland news writer dean of the college of arts and sciences bobb carson will deliver the winter commence ment address on jan 12 2003 bobb was selected because of his tireless commitment to his department his college and the university i continue to be amazed by his accomplishments president gregory farrington said carson is proud to be giving the address to the graduating students but he acknowledges that not everyone will remem ber his speech i will attempt more than oratorical anonymity carson said we need to keep perspec tive on the event and the message to be passed everyone remembers his or her gradua tion but no one remembers the commencement speech carson however is honored to be invited to speak it is a nice compliment which suggests that i may have something useful to say and that the president believes i'm still sufficiently articulate carson said farrington recognizes carson's achievements as great accomplish ments bobb has been able to serve as a dean while at the same time cruis ing the pacific and atlantic oceans in a sub drilling for sedimentary cores farrington said he is a dedicated respected and a recog nized academic and scientist carson joined the department of geological sciences in 1971 and was promoted to a full-time pro fessor in 1982 before taking his current position as the dean of stu dents he served as associate dean of the college of arts and sciences from 1983-85 carson's dedication to his students and the school are apparent through his many achievements at lehigh includ ing the stabler award for excellence in teaching which he received in 1992 and the hillman award in 1997 carson holds a m.s and ph.d in geological oceanogra phy from the university of washington seattle and a b.a in geology from carleton college in minnesota carson's research has been a major influence on his students he has taken the students in his research program on several field study trips including oregon washington vancouver island and barbados carson plans to retire as a dean and a professor in june i've been surrounded by excellent students and out standing faculty colleagues and i've learned and benefited immensely from both lehigh's provided an environment in which it was very easy and rewarding to immerse myself in teaching and research carson said for all those excellent years i owed the institution some time and effort as dean it's a kind of inverted penance i suppose the commencement ceremo ny is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m at stabler arena 247 graduate students and 204 undergraduates are plan ning on receiving their diplo mas a reception for graduates and guests will be held at the rauch fieldhouse immediately following the ceremony march ignites hope for change by susan hong news writer students faculty and staff rallied against violence and sexual assualt wednesday night at the take back the night march sponsored by forward forward is the acronym for the organization that is for the organization and recognition of women's advancements rights and development take back the night is an international rally and march to unify women men and chil dren in an awareness of vio lence the event is organized in various communities in an effort to take a stand against violent acts and commemorate the lives of those who were victims of sexual assault lehigh's candlelit march brought out many members of the school community a bus left from drown hall at 6:30 p.m to take passengers to lookout point where university chaplain dr lloyd steffen addressed the crowd before the march the march began at 7 p.m and ended at the uc flagpole where participants were greeted with hot chocolate and cookies there was a speak-out after wards where several people including two victims of sexual assault had the opportunity to share their experiences and feel ings vice president of forward kym murphy 05 was happy with the turnout of the event b&wphoto by mandy walls students faculty and staff marched from lookout point to rally against sexual assault and remember its victims during the take back the night walk sponsored by forward on wednesday ifc joins together for leukemia charity by jennifer iwinski news writer fraternities in cooperation with the interfraternity council have made strides to help chil dren in the lehigh valley lehigh fraternities recendy made a donation of 2,000 to support the saber bufton leukemia fund according to kappa alpha brother evan gerber 04 gerber brought the idea of supporting the charity to the table at an interfraternity council meeting in october after being introduced by a brother to tiffany bufton who runs the program almost all of the fraternities decided to donate according to gerber each year more than 2,000 children are diagnosed with leukemia a cancer of the blood cells according to the national cancer institute the saber bufton leukemia fund is a local charity dedicated to helping children in the lehigh valley who have been diagnosed with leukemia and other child hood cancers by raising funds for research of the diseases the program also sponsors an annual 5k walk/run in allentown to raise money for families unable to afford the financial strain of medical bills gerber said the third annual walk/run took place this year on nov 9 dozens of families are in need gerber said the program helps make their holidays a little happier along with the 2,000 letters have been mailed to local busi nesses asking them to match the donation said gerber this donation kicks off the new community service plan that the ifc implemented and shows that we are making posi tive steps to becoming an even greater part of lehigh and local community life gerber said jeremy piccini 03 president of alpha tau omega fraternity created the new ifc community service plan in early november it basically changed our inter fraternity council bylaws so each fraternity must participate in an
