the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 18 friday november 8 2002 all the lehigh news first alarm party bust raise questions by greg meyer news writer bethlehem deputy fire commissioner eugene novak said he was not informed of a fire alarm that was set off at phi kappa theta fraternity some time after midnight saturday chief of police edward shupp said he was on the scene investigating an unregistered party when the alarm went off shupp said police checked the alarm and reset it in a few seconds he had the campus police dispatcher notify the bethlehem fire department that it was not necessary to send fire trucks to the scene joe wagner a dispatcher who was not on duty saturday evening said when an alarm is set off in a campus building it triggers an alarm at the campus police office that has to be manu ally forwarded by the dispatcher to the fire department novak said police at the scene of an alarm can recom mend that trucks not be sent but it is up to the assistant fire chief to make a decision novak said he has seen no record of such a call it's possible it was reported to the alarm operator he said but i still should have a record of it one freshman female who was at the party said that when the alarm went off shupp said no one was allowed to leave the building some students said they snuck out through the kitchen the freshman said it took at least one minute before the alarm was turned off shupp said the building was not evacuated because it was determined to be a false alarm although some people did leave when the alarm went off the girl said between 20 and 30 party-goers were subjected to breathalyzer tests one person was tested at a time while the rest of the group watched several students said they didn't think the police were changing the tube on the machine between each test my friend mentioned while they were doing the breathalyz er test that they weren't switch ing tubes the girl said it said my blood alcohol content was 19 but i don't feel like i was that drunk bethlehem police sergeant dave brown said the residue from another person using the same tube would not cause a big change in the reading if the machine was not recalibrated correctly however it could he seniors launch campaign for gift by safiyajafari lifestyle editor the annual senior class gift reception and unveiling of class numbers is a time when the senior class gathers and decides how it will leave its mark on the university the class of 2003's event held last month adhered to this tradition the first official event of the senior year it is at this gathering that the class gift is unveiled a fund-raising plan to pay for the gift is also announced this year the seniors want to commission a statue of lehigh founder asa packer the senior class gift program began in 1928 as a way for seniors to give back to lehigh in return for the educa tion they had received class gift chairperson kristen actis grande 03 said this year we want to give a gift that will be widely recognized by everyone on campus something that will be here for years to come when we return for visits and reunions actis-grande said that 76 percent of the senior class sup ported the idea for a statue one of the original things that led us to the idea of creating this statue is that we feel asa packer embodies many of the same ideals and traits for success as the class of 2003 actis grande said this statue sym bolizes both asa's vision and the class of 2003's spirit in a way that will be remembered for years to come this year the class gift com mittee hopes to reach a record breaking 45 percent participa tion in the fund-raising cam paign this figure would not only be higher than the class of 20()2's attempted rate of partic military action against iraq the students along with members of lafayette college's students for social justice joined an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 peaceful protesters in washington d.c organized by international a.n.s.we.r a liberal group opposed to a possible war the oct 26 rally featured more than four hours of speeches followed by a march that circled the area around the white house protesters blocked the streets shutting down much of the traffic in the city a pro-war rally was held across the street anti-war rallies were simulta neously held in san francisco rome berlin copenhagen denmark tokyo manila and mexico city speakers included actress susan sarandon jesse jackson al sharpton congresswoman cynthia mckinney singer patti smith and former u.s attorney general ramsey clark representatives of muslim organizations and trade unions also spoke protest veteran dot magargal 77 of media pa was one of the protesters here i'm not being spit on people aren't throwing tomatoes at me and joan baez isn't singing he said people just want to come out and say that not everyone wants to go to war this is a lot of people a lot of voters and it has to count for something everyone was united for one simple purpose to let our gov ernment know we oppose the war and to give justice to all those unjusuy suffering from the world wide war on terror he said the united states presented a final revision of its iraq resolu tion to the united nations security wednesday the draft although weaker than earlier versions still calls for tough new weapons inspections with a threat
