the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 16 friday november 1 2002 all the lehigh news first alum's film examines college social life by rex hazleton b&wpholo by jenny staple news writer when patrick bounincontri was a student at lehigh he noticed how ridiculously stu dents treat one another when it comes to relationships and hooking up out of an interest in film making and a boredom spawned by a dwindling social scene at lehigh the film friends with benefits was born the film was created as an attempt to capture college social maura kutner 05 helps children decorate pumpkins during the annual alpha phi halloween party the event allows local children to participate in various activities planned by the sisters alpha phi hosts halloween party by tim mccutchan the alpha phi sorority hosted a halloween party for local children in the saucon valley day care center on monday it was nice said louise adams a worker as the day care center the girls do a great job and the kids really enjoy being with them the girls decorate and plan activities for them the kids were excited all day adams said in most community service events our proceeds go to breast cancer research that is part of our philanthropy as something we believe in jenny staple community service chair of alpha phi said this event however is just for fun we do this every year and we enjoy being around the kids the event has become a tra dition for the girls of alpha phi we decorate and play games it is a great experience staple said in previous years the kids were taken to the sorority house to go trick or treating doing this is something that we like to participate in iliana schwartz 04 a sister at alpha phi said the best part is that we get to provide a safe environ ment for the kids we spent a lot of time preparing for this event sheena cline 05 said we went shopping for decorations and candy as well as pump kins the kids were really looking forward to decorating the pumpkins cline also commented on the spirit of the festive halloween event the sisters spirit gets the kids halloween pumped cline said being here and playing with the kids makes us reflect upon our childhood and remember what it was like to be a little kid i'm glad i had this opportunity it's a sisterhood bonding moment as well daphne goldfarb 05 said events like this strengthen our sisterhood it brings us closer together as sisters it makes us all feel good to give back to the community and to use our house name for a good cause goldfarb said later this month the sisters of alpha phi will also sponsor a thanksgiving-fest for the boys and girls club of america all proceeds of the thanksgiv ing-fest will go towards breast cancer research news writer diversity goals receive large grant university awarded 55,000 by alcoa foundation to support global goals by lauren eisner will assist with many lehigh pro grams and will further implement the university's goal for great minority opportunities and pro grams lehigh is a more lively and diverse place thanks to the alcoa campus partnership program president gregory farrington said their support helps us better address the diversity and multicultural issues that face us and is in line with our goal of making sure that lehigh has open doors and open minds to people of all backgrounds lehigh is one of only 29 selected schools that works with alcoa to maintain a part nership that works in support of programs that promote diversity gender equality and global perspectives in a multi tude of areas including busi ness and engineering some of the programs provide a residential experience and offer encouragement for pre-college minority students to work towards higher learning other programs also provide the opportunity for and teach about important leadership skills for minorities the lehigh-alcoa partner ship has been built over many years said barry m owens president of alcoa distribution and industrial products it is our desire to stay on the cutting edge and we believe we can accomplish that through our partnership with educational institutions such as lehigh since 1996 the partnership has been integral for fulfilling these lehigh diversity initiatives and in further involving the alcoa foundation with the lehigh community there are more than 30 lehigh alumni on record who are employees of alcoa the university plans to con tinue to build on the current successful relationship with alcoa through research recruit ing internships and coopera tion with faculty news writer lehigh has been awarded a 55,000 grant by the alcoa foundation in support of its global and diversity goals for the 2002 2003 academic year diversity is central to the university's mission and identi fied as one of the seven goals of lehigh said tim herrlinger associate director for the office of corporate and foundation relations our students will live in a diverse world their lehigh experience
