the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 15 tuesday october 29 2002 all the lehigh news first phish lead singer reels in crowd by wayne celia news writer fans came from far and near to experience trey anastasio this past saturday at stabler arena many lehigh students shared in the excitement but still more came from vermont new york massachusetts and several other states i think it was cool that the lehigh community got a chance to be a part of the trey community rory connolly 04 said trey the lead singer of phish one of the most successful touring bands in history played with his own band saturday blending unique rhythms and creative solos the band formed in 1998 when they called themselves the eight foot fluorescent tubes they have grown in membership since saturday's show included a horn section and two percus sion sections as trey played at the packed stabler arena it was easy to see why his band has grown in popularity with each show trey has an onstage pres ence like no other paul huish 05 said this combined with one of the best supporting casts in the business kept fans coming back for more time and again ashley ryan drove by herself for three hours to be at the show i just couldn't miss it she said ryan was not alone in her thinking trey has a devoted fol lowing most of whom rarely if ever miss a show they can be seen selling necklaces or burri tos outside any venue anastasio plays for some though there were bumps in the road many patrons said they were upset with the tight security concertgoers had to wait in extremely long lines just to gain access to the arena following this they had to empty their pockets raise the contents above their heads and be frisked the security checkpoint was ridiculous i can't at stabler arena saturday students react to playboy party school rankings by dani brody lehigh scores 23 on the top 25 list some are surprised but we know how to do it right people think that a school of our academic caliber would be full of dorks who sit in their rooms all day doing equations it's the complete opposite the ranking comes several years after the university first launched project impact a program designed to cut down on binge drinking a recent survey from the harvard school of public health however shows that the efforts have made a differ ence the survey reported that the there was a 22 percent drop in the number of students who reported missing a class due to alcohol between 1997 and 2001 several administrators said they were not necessarily angry or concerned with the playboy ranking president gregory farrington news writer said the survey is insignificant so-called polls of this sort are aimed to sell magazines and nothing more farrington said they have no other real meaning in an interview with the morning call andrew stanten director of university communi cations said we put absolutely zero stock in what playboy has to say professor of political science ted morgan analyzed the rank ings a bit deeper i sure don't mind students letting down and having fun but there is a dark side to the party school label morgan said i think the work-hard play-hard campus culture can be a little oppressive morgan said that such a label encourages an apathetic atmos phere for students the most popular porno graphic magazine in the world has just ranked lehigh as 23rd out of the top 25 party schools in the nation in its november 2002 issue the magazine gives details of where to party what to drink and where to get cheap beer for the schools ranked in the top 20 the schools ranked 20 through 25 were simply repre sented by two student quotes the quotes supporting lehigh's rank are from students only identified as michael and deborrah lehigh parties every night michael said there are never breaks after the normal party ends another begins and lasts until morning deborrah was quoted as saying we are a little school taylor residents changing image by tucker hottes news writer many students hold the false belief that taylor college is a substance free dormitory according to several residents there this is one of the many misperceptions a new commit tee to improve taylor's image will address eric binter 03 head of the committee said current housing literature distributed to prospective students and incoming freshmen is mislead ing housing
