the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 14 friday october 25 2002 all the lehigh news first board pens new policy for students by patrick fulton news writer the board of trustees will vote on a draft for a new policy on aca demic freedoms and responsibili ties around the end of the spring semester at the earliest among the reasons for creat ing this draft were concerns that the university's new harassment policy would infringe on academ ic freedom the american association of university professors policy on academic freedom and tenure created in 1940 is the closest thing to a policy on academic freedoms the university currently employs the policy gives no definitions of either academic freedom or harassment and it is geared almost entirely toward faculty many members of the universi ty feel that a policy is needed that speaks.for the rest of the lehigh community as well the recommended aaup policy on academic freedom focuses on tenure and on the faculty senior vice president of institutional research nelson markley said the proposed policy is for the whole campus faculty students staff and trustees members of the student senate and other groups have been ques tioned about the new policy since the academic freedom of students is a major component of the draft academic freedom is a big student issue and students are specifically mentioned in the doc ument associate professor of law matthew melone said the draft for the new policy hits on a wide array of issues the draft states that instructors and stu dents have freedom in the class room but should avoid introduc ing subject matters that do not relate to what is being taught the draft also explains that nothing should be introduced in the classroom that creates a hostile learning environment any mate rial relevant to the course while possibly offensive to some stu dents will not be deemed hostile the draft explains that it is the responsibility of instructors and students to create a healthy learn ing environment academic freedom is impor tant but it should not get in the way of academic responsibility with freedom comes accountabili ty matt casey 05 said under the draft faculty staff and students are granted the macgrady's pub offers new scene by tracey lomrantz senior news editor j.p macgrady's irish pub which officially opened for busi ness sept 25 is fast becoming a new favorite hang out for lehigh students with 45 imported and micro brewed beers on tap a full lunch and dinner menu and a new loca tion right on south side bethlehem's third street the new bar is a hit the bar and restaurant is owned and operated by christopher lacroix who also runs its sister pub j.p o'malley's in auentown lacroix said lehigh students seem to have really taken a liking to the new establishment business has been excellent lacroix said and we're definite ly putting a hurting on the ho as lacroix said one reason macgrady's is enjoying such success so far is its appeal of offer ing something new many seniors and other off-campus bar fre quenters said they are glad to finally have somewhere new to hang out and macgrady's is a welcome change from the tired nights spent at leon's and the tally ho it's a better atmosphere than leon's and the people are a lot friendlier erika wortmann 03 said students are pleased that the new bar is more of a genuine pub with a variety of draught beers the selection of beers is exquisite matt dennis 03 said it keeps me coming back time and time again lacroix said the pub has been consistently busy since its opening but lehigh students are not their only patrons he said they account for about half of their business the other half con sisting of bethlehem residents being the owner of o'malley's and the former owner of macgillicutty's pub has taught lacroix how to run a bar and choosing this newest location was b&wphoto by cornelius j sqijare j.p macgrady's opened sept 25 on south side bethlehem's third street and offers a new scene for many bar patrons ifc fraternity interest still healthy by jessica glowinski news writer new information collected by the interfraternity council ifc this week showing that less freshmen males are interest ed in joining fraternities this year may be put to rest information released by the university last week said that only 317 freshman boys had indicated an interest in pledging a fraternity this was down 40 percent from last year when 533 students said they wanted to join but after the ifc collected active rush lists from most of the fraternities the number of fresh men who have already signed up rose to more than 500 ifc president matthew jaffe 03 stressed the fact that not all the active rush lists have been submitted yet jaffe explained that the reason for the disparity between the two estimates is that the initial esti mate was taken from a sign-in sheet from just one event -
