the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 12 friday october 18 2002 all the lehigh news first forum to focus on campus diversity by amanda busby news writer announcement of a new initiative launched by president gregory farrington to increase campus diversity odi said that the diversity forum is designed to be con structive this forum is designed to offer students and faculty the opportunity to discuss die issue of diversity and is not designed to be a complaint session he said other topics to be discussed at the forum include correlating diversity to leadership and lead ership development odi said the discussion will also educate participants about how diversity relates to the professional work place i hope this forum will chal as part of a new campus ini tiative diversity will be the focus of a forum next week the discussion to be held thursday in packard auditorium is designed to raise awareness and understanding about diversity related issues dr henry odi event orga nizer said the forum will allow participants to discuss ideas in an open environment it will provide the opportuni ty for all of us to think about what we can to do provide a healthy community that is welcoming to all odi said the event follows the recent lenge students to dispel myths or inappropriate assumptions about what expanding diversity really means on a university campus odi said diversity should be perceived as a strength and not a weakness or liability several key corporate execu tives from the region will partici pate in the forum panelists include dipti s gulati 90 a partner at deloitte and touche douglas brown member of the general counsel for air products and chemicals inc hap wagner former chairman and president of air products ron wesson senior vice president of dun and bradstreet and carol wood manager of diversity and ethics for agere systems inc the panelists will discuss how diversity has affected their corporations and how they have responded odi said they will encourage students to recognize that they are in a position to help contribute toward improv ing diversity at the university and in their careers alex curtiss 05 said she thinks the discussion-oriented nature of the forum will help students gain a better under standing of diversity-related issues increasing the diversity here will be beneficial curtiss said i think it will prepare us for the real world department offices prepare for move by chris ranck news writer coxe lab will soon undergo renovations so that it can be used as a central point for the international community on campus the international students and scholars office the study abroad office and the english as a second language department will all be housed in die reno vated facility locating all three offices in coxe lab allows a central point of service on campus for stu dents stacy stainbrook assistant to the provost for communica tions and academic projects said i hope die interaction will more naturally occur between students interested in studying abroad and our international students for example stainbrook said students will be able to easily access services offered by the international students office in between esl classes the project which should be completed around midjuly is still in the planning phase the military science department which currently occupies the building will be relocated to the basement of the university center as part of the plan before the move can be com pleted however the journalism and communications department will have to move to its new loca tion in coppee hall that move is currently scheduled for december so the coxe lab renovations most likely won't begin until spring b&w photo by tom steele coxe lab is set to be renovated this spring the building will house the international students office and related departments journalism program receives grant by sonja toulouse professor three students bring journalism to students at local middle school news writer at broughal middle school located on packer avenue i'm very happy that lehigh and the journalism department can continue to be associated with the new york times lule said for all its faults the times is the most important newspaper in this country and maybe the world it's good for lehigh to be con nected with it the program offers an inte grated hands-on approach for both the middle school students and their lehigh mentors students in the program come from a wide range of socio-eco nomic and racial backgrounds the journalism and commu nications department has been awarded a two-year 25,000 grant from the new york times foundation to introduce young minority students to journalism the grant is a renewal of a two-year 30,000 grant from the times foundation in 2000 the money will support a program that has professor jack lule and journalism students amy cohen 03 safiya jafari 03 and tracey lomrantz 03 working directly with students being a minority student i can relate to the goals of this program because i wasn't introduced to journalism until i came to college jafari said this program allows the stu dents to have more informa tion regarding their career choices lule began the program to address the lack of diversity in the nation's newsrooms he said this tendency is even worse in the online journalism field due to a digital divide or racial inequality in access to technology lule said he would like to continue getting minority stu dents interested in journalism at an early age diversity isn't just the right thing to do he said it simply makes for better jour nalism while working for the philadelphia inquirer lule said he learned first-hand how important diversity is to the newsroom the paper then was very diverse and it really helped the newspaper's coverage of the city he said the reporters and the editors understood the day-to-day challenges faced by see diversity page 4 see grant page 4 see coke page 4 men
