the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 11 tuesday october 15 2002 all the lehigh news first square officially opened by ashley weakland the campus square grand opening celebration on saturday welcomed students and residents in the community with performances from lehigh and local bands free food and prizes president farrington and bethlehem mayor don cunningham cut the ribbon that set off the ribbon canons officially opening campus square a performance by brass fanfare followed the cer emony the first 50 people to arrive received a free champion t-shirt every hour from 10 a.m until 4 p.m the bookstore gave away prizes including hats t-shirts java-city mugs and other lehigh paraphernalia pastaficio's the new italian restaurant scheduled to open next month held a drawing for a student to win a free lunch each week of the spring semester while jazzman's held drawings for a cd player t-shirts bags cd's and more the cup offered free brown and white sprinkles tours of the square's apartments were given throughout the day the ceremony emcees were chris norberg 03 and mike metcalf 03 they were responsible for the giveaways which included lehigh gear gift certificates to local restau rants and shops and even a 50 news writer b&w photo by eveardell gift-certificate to pastaficio the crowd gathered to watch the wide range of entertainment performances from both stu dents and local groups in the community the performances were kicked off by a lehigh apparel fashion show featuring universi-cuties the clothes were modeled by students and other guests kappa alpha psi performed their famous step routine and the tatra slovak folk group present ed their dance other performances included the hispanic american league of artists hala the melismatics and the purpose gospel group there were book signings by members of the lehigh and local communities gathered at the campus square grand opening celebrations and shared in the festivities which included free food entertainment and fun prizes plans set to revitalize linderman by katherine lomas news writer the 15 million linderman library revitalization project has recently been approved by president farrington to proceed to the next stage several major goals of the linderman revitalization project include showcasing lehigh's humanities collections and pro grams creating classrooms and group study spaces providing handicapped access and easier navigation and installing new heating and air conditioning systems the transformed linderman library will be outfitted to serve for many years as an attractive and lively intellectual center and humanities library for the campus vice provost for library and technology services bruce taggart said taggart is very enthusiastic about the president's approval on the linderman project being given a go on the linderman library project is a testament to the hard work done by a large number of people including both lts staff and lehigh faculty it is also a recognition of the centrality of both libraries and humanities at lehigh taggart said director of administrative and planning services in library and technology services sue cady wants students to be aware of the library's 125 th anniversary cele bration this academic year there will be some special celebrations in the coming months for the whole campus to lehigh founder gets rainy reception by patrick fulton news writer student leaders trustees faculty and staff were honored at this year's founder's day cere mony in packer memorial church the ceremony began with the procession of all the leaders to be recognized fol lowed by the procession of the american flag to america the beautiful sung by the lehigh choir in addition to the choir the mainstreet brass performed a number of the musical pieces at the ceremony formed in 1986 this group which is based in the lehigh valley has appeared in ceremonies and performances in both pennsylvania and new jersey timothy harrell university organist also performed at the ceremony perhaps the highlight of the ceremony was the interlude asa packer remembered which featured a speech given by george miller an actor por traying asa packer sporting a tuxedo and a full length beard miller gave a speech about the history of packer's life and the history of lehigh as we gather today in this magnificent chapel...l take a great deal of pride in what this university has become miller said after working as a farmer a carpenter and a builder of canal boats packer founded the uni versity in 1865 hi its first year the universi ty was home to only 40 stu dents six professors and george washington smith the university's janitor miller said with empty pockets a head full of imaginings and nothing but the grace of god i set off with a walking stick a staff to guide me miller said as packer with this in mind each of the student presidents was pre sented with a walking stick upon his or her installation at the ceremony we award this centuries-old symbol to today's leaders of lehigh president farrington said may it uphold you as you navigate the challenges and help shape the future of
