the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 10 friday october 11 2002 all the lehigh news first jazzman's cafe open for business by jessica glowinski news writer jazzman's cafe located next to the cup in campus square officially opened its doors sept 28 according to manager dave sheaffer business has been great the students have been very receptive he said schaeffer said he thought the fact that jazzman's accepts lehigh's gold mountain plus was the greatest attraction for students the coffee house has received a warm welcome from the rest of the community as well the college faculty and bethlehem residents love it too sheaffer said for example the residents of the high rise across the street from campus square are fre quent visitors to the establish ment the president's goal was to unify lehigh with the communi ty and its definitely doing that sheaffer said business is increasing every day sheaffer said jazzman's main goal is to provide lehigh stu dents with a place where they can study or simply sit back and relax the coffee house scene was much needed on the south side sheaffer said the stu dents needed a resource they could utilize and jazzman's is geared to be a trendy upscale establishment with a good product that they can come and b&wphoto by tom steele jazzman's cafe located next to campus square is now open the coffee shop is expected to be very popular with students charges filed for fire safety violations by greg meyer news writer seven charges have been filed against lehigh students for tampering with fire equipment since the beginning of this semester after filing a report of such an incident lehigh police send a cita tion to the office of district justice matos gonzales gonzales said the number of charges of this variety is unusually high this year this is the first time we've seen this kind of volume she said it is large in comparison to previous years chief shupp said lehigh police and bethlehem fire offi cials respond to every alarm with a complete search of each build ing it is during these searches that officials discover covered or missing smoke detectors dave stanek 04 said the increase in reports of tampering may be a direct result of the recent enforcement of the city's fire ordinance when more strict policies are put into place they must be enforced he said the only way to enforce fire policy is to conduct more frequent inspec tions which lead to the discovery of more violations five of the seven charged stu dents are fraternity members shupp told the morning call that if tampered equipment was found in the common area of a fraternity house the president would be charged two of the charged students were presidents of their respective fraternities gonzales said the offense is considered a summary arrest the first offense yields a 200 fine 30 days in prison or both she said a second offense is 500 60 days or both third and subsequent offenses are 1000 60 days or both students charged are also referred to the office of student conduct stanek said he doesn't think students will stop breaking fire codes at the threat of a fine if i were fined stanek said i'd just send it home to my parents make up some excuse and continue what i had been doing according to the police reports those charged with fire violations include stephen r cantwell 18 of m&m for covering a smoke detector with plastic an unidenti fied juvenile from palmer house for a missing fire detector james orr 20 of theta delta chi for covering a smoke detector and bentley h hall of delta phi for covering smoke detectors in the house's bar area justin r mccarthy president of phi sigma kappa was also charged when police found several cups covering smoke detectors in a hallway michael demarcantonio of sigma chi was also charged when police found plastic cups covering smoke detectors in room 206 gregory b markus 21 presi dent of alpha sigma phi was charged when police found plastic cups over smoke detectors during a fire alarm zoellner fall season full of new events by ally pereg news writer this fall a vast collection of events at zx>ellner arts center are being introduced performances will involve the university's department of theatre the lehigh university philharmonic orchestra and lehigh university choral arts on sunday oct 6 lehigh faculty members paul salerni paul chou and debra field participat ed in a concert entitled nurtured by music food and love they were accompanied by professor salerni's two sons domenic and miles and 35 violin and viola students who study under suzuki method teacher nancy terlaak poot the suzuki method is a mode of instruction developed by shinichi suzuki in which children are taught to learn music as they are taught to speak suzuki believed that all chil dren possess musical talent if they are surrounded with hearing and learning music at an early age suzuki also believed that this culturing of music could bring peace and understanding to the world the concert raised money to support the new suzuki method musical instruction programs in the elementary schools on the south side of bethlehem salerni said the performance consisted of music written by bach suzuki and music professors salerni and sametz of the lehigh university faculty the concert included two groups of music one of which concentrated on music for two violins the other involved music about food between 1200 and 2000 were raised to support suzuki method instruction in our area the theatre department's pro duction of samuel beckett's all that fall will be performed on oct 16-18 at 8 p.m and at 2 p.m on oct 13 the stage is also modeled in a way that allows the actors to make background noises which enables the audience to pay attention to voice
