the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 9 tuesday october 1 2002 all the lehigh news first ceremony will focus on students by patrick fulton news writer free food games music and prizes are just a few of the many things that will be featured at this year's founder's day cele bration lehigh's leaders past and present will be honored at a cer emony in packer chapel next friday at 4 p.m members of the board of trustees and faculty leaders will preside over the ceremony in addition student leaders such as class presidents members of the graduate student council and members of student senate will be recognized a significant change from previous years one of the primary focuses of founder's day is to educate stu dents about the history of the university and its founder asa packer we're hoping to put packer b&w photo by tom steele packer chapel will host the festivities for this year's founder's day ceremony the event to be held next weekend will coincide with the official grand opening of campus square job fair reassures worried seniors by tucker hottes news writer even in the midst of an eco nomic downturn the job outlook for graduating seniors may not be so bleak that was the consensus of many students and employers at this year's career fair held thursday donna goldfeder director of career services said the economy may be a little tighter but jobs are out there the career fair hosted roughly 115 employers slightly down from last year's 120 in 2000 175 companies participated some employers who hadn't taken new hires last year were looking to fill positions this year we wouldn't be here if we weren't hiring morgan stanley representative adam sporn said last year the only lehigh stu dents hired by general motors corporation were those who were already interns at the company this year however gm is looking to expand its base the numbers won't be real big but we do expect to make some offers gm university relations team member jeff parsons said many students said they felt confident about their job prospects after speaking to representatives from the various companies chris morgan 05 a comput er science and business major said the career fair provided me with excellent networking opportunities i shook hands with people i'd like to work for some day still some students including leigh-anne sigona 05 said they were not pleased with the turnout of employers in certain fields i was a little upset because there were so few companies for biology sigona said i only went to two tables although the majority of positions available were for engineering and business majors employers had positive remarks for many of the depart ments in the college of arts and science andrew kantner of rodale inc a publishing company said students from lehigh stack up well against students from big journalism schools around the country in fact nearly all employers present compared lehigh stu dents favorably to students from other schools lutron electronics representa senate debates club recognition by john misinco senior news editor the student senate tackled several controversial issues last tuesday regarding student clubs after a heated debate the senate approved recognition of the lehigh israel support coalition 20-3 with 14 senators abstaining from the vote according to the proposal seeking recognition for the club the club's mission is educating and organizing stu dents faculty and the local community in support of an american alliance and aid for the state of israel in all of its affairs club president brian molk 05 said the purpose is to educate people on the middle east and america's relationship with israel molk said the group will bring in speakers and try to get members involved in political action committees senator john harrison 05 however said the club's stated purpose bothered him if you vote yes on this you're signaling the way to rec ognize an al-qaeda support society he said many senators said that recog nizing clubs with diverse view points is important in achieving the senate's overall goals of increasing diversity and student involvement they say we have an apoliti cal campus so if we don't approve clubs like this we can't accom plish our goal senator melissa klein 04 said senator meagan meier 05 said she agreed if we're going to start doing this there's no easy way to get into it meier said so why not just do it senator sarah friedman 04 said the senate judicial board could address any concerns sen ators had about the club's purpose the board created earlier this year will find organi zations that violate the senate club rules and regulations liable and determine the conse quences molk said he was not sur prised by the intense debate i
