the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 8 friday september 27 2002 all the lehigh news first search for new dean of arts & sciences begins byjeniwinski news writer a committee of academic representatives has been formed to carry out the search for a new dean to head the college of arts and sciences provost ron yoshida said in a statement released to the campus community last week the search which will offi cially begin with the first meeting of the committee on oct 9 is expected to produce candidates for campus visits by feb and culminate in an announcement of a new dean on june 1 yoshida said richard durand dean of the college of business and economics was appointed by provost yoshida to head the search committee the committee is made up of representatives from each college and every division in the colleges of arts and sciences as well as students and members of the board of trustees b&w photo by tom steele graduate student amanda ault and gwen taylor will represent the student body on the committee we haven't been formally charged with the search yet and i need to wait until after that meeting to determine what my role in it is ault said yoshida has also solicited proposals from three execu the interior of the of the current linderman's library that is a part of the plan to revitalize the library the estimated cost of the project will be 15 million senate tackles cheating by john misinco senior news editor students who commit academ ic dishonesty may soon have more to worry about than the strict penalties they could face if caught a new student senate initiative is set to determine how much of a problem academic dishonesty is at the university this fact-finding endeavor will be led by the senate academic and research commit tees senate president jp matychak 03 said tuesday that the academic committee will research how much of a problem cheating is at lehigh the research committee will examine the problem at other universities as well research committee chair arsenio rodriguez 03 said that gathering the information could provide a big challenge the goal presented to us is to get some statistical information rodriguez said some of that stuff is hard to find because if you cheat and get away with it you're not going to be included in the sta tistics matychak said that such research will be helpful even if cheating is not a major problem at the universities being examining let's see what policies they have for academic integrity and how we can adopt them he said matychak also said the senate should take the lead in addressing the issue because students may not feel comfortable discussing it with faculty or administrators if administrators go to georgetown to research the problem they may not get the same answer as students would he said senator sarah friedman 04 said comparing the amount of cheating at lehigh to other col leges would be helpful to the study in order to have concrete information to base our opinion on it's good to have a compari son she said the university code of conduct defines academic dishon esty as cheating on quizzes or exams unauthorized collusion between students on an assign ment or test computer dishonesty grade falsification and plagiarism data falsification and unautho rized copying of homework assignments are also included in the definition the probe into academic dis honesty is part of a new senate ini tiative aimed at promoting student grant for fiber optics attained by tim mccuthchan news writer optical technology is revolu tionizing the communications industry and lehigh's center for optical technologies is playing a key role in making it happen lehigh's future role in the industry was made clear in a ceremony held last friday when an announcement for a 15 million grant to be used for the center located on the fifth floor of whitaker lab was given david e smith jr class of 71 has made great contribu tions to the center by helping to make sure that funds will be readily available for the direc tor's position the university also intro duced james hwang the new director of the facility at the ceremony hwang will bring to the center a tremendous record of research and teaching as well as a strong sense of management strategic planning and industrial interaction vice president for research dave williams said hwang said the technology developed here will benefit society in many ways it can be used for the internet biomedical and homeland security purposes hwang said hwang also said the new technology would be able to fix the data traffic jam the optical fibers will increase bandwidths 1,000 times com pared to those available today the increase in bandwidth would enable one to shop and download movies online instantly hwang said he would like to sign up 10 major companies as paying members within the year he said the goal can be accomplished despite temporary set-backs that the industry faces he would like to land a major block grant from the federal government and create a world class research center in the 20th century this region was renowned for its steal and heavy industry state
