the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 7 tuesday september 24 2002 all the lehigh news first early admissions gather on campus for clipper by anthony brichta assistant news editor students who participated in last spring's online clipper project got a chance to meet their professors and fellow class mates at a meet and greet session held friday in lacocca hall the clipper project gives high school students who have been accepted through the early decision process the opportuni ty to take accredited lehigh classes online during the spring of their senior year in order to evaluate the costs and benefits of web-based university courses mj bishop assistant professor of educational technology and sally a white dean of the college of education are co investigators in the second phase of the project clipper 11 which is funded by a grant from the andrew w mellon foundation white is pleased with the project thus far and sees the results of clipper having a strong impact it's been a huge success not only from the student's perspec tives but also from the faculty's white said the data we collect will be a foundation photo courtesy ofmarybeth t colton the clipper project invites high school seniors accepted through early decision who took onlince classes to meet with faculty and other students who were involved with the project gold plus expands by liz conroy news writer as gold plus usage is starting to expand into campus square and eventually south side bethlehem students have been responding well to this added con venience the cup a new ice cream shop in campus square is the first independent business to accept lehigh's gold plus card the result has been tremendous anywhere between 80 and 90 percent of the cup's business so far has been generated through gold plus usage a representative in the gold plus office said this response means a contin ued dedication by the lehigh community to offer the gold plus option at even more stores in bethlehem the merchants in campus square are like test sites for this new program barry gaal asso ciate vice president of business services said we are just trying to get a feel based on student reac tion the other campus square businesses are following closely behind the cup jazzman's the new coffee house is scheduled to open sept 28 and pastaiicio's the italian restaurant is looking towards an oct 7 opening both will be accepting gold plus the program runs logistically much like a credit card the mer chants buy card readers and have monthly bills lehigh receives three percent of all gold plus profits plans to expand into the south sex assault charges dropped by greg meyer news writer no charges will be filed against a delta phi fraternity member who allegedly sexually assaulted a student from another school in reaction to the incident delta phi president jason gerstein 03 said the fraternity is sponsoring a speaker to address the issue of sexual assault the alleged assault took place at delta phi fraternity at about 1 a.m sept 7 according to campus police logs assistant northampton county district attorney patricia broscius told the morning call there was not enough evidence in the case to prove sexual contact without consent broscius was unavailable for additional comment gerstein told the morning call shortly after the alleged incident that he was not at the house at the time he would not comment on the incident except to say d phi is glad with the outcome of the investigation and thanks the university police for their efforts in finding out the truth kristin handler director of the women's center said it is common for cases like this to be dismissed for lack of evidence while handler admits she does not know the details in this case she says far too often these cases are considered unfounded because the woman knew the guy involved or was drinking the night it happened handler thinks this is a problem it doesn't mean that this was a false report she said it just means they couldn't create a criminal case in the spring handler said the women's center requested funding for an additional staff member to focus on gender based violence prevention the funding came through over the summer smeaton and handler both want to fill the position as soon as possible smeaton said realistically they should have someone by the beginning of the spring semester this added position would allow the women's center to focus more on the issues of advo cacy training prevention and education about gender-based
