the brown and white vol 110 no 6 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 friday september 20 2002 ah the lehigh news first dining services looks to improve by tucker hottes news writer dining services has been paying close attention to its facili ties and renovations for the three main dining halls on campus are currendy being reviewed mike lupori district manager for the wood company said there is a good possibility that the brodhead dining hall will be reno vated this summer some students however said they don't think renovating brodhead is necessary i like how brodhead tries to make the whole experience more personal but it sometimes lacks the variety of the other dining halls because of its smaller size erica panis 04 said i don't think it needs renovation it's just a little small the student senate is currendy working with dining services to meet the needs of students our function as a committee is to provide a voice for the stu dents regarding issues dealing with the dining halls food courts and eateries on campus said renae deßonis 05 chair of the senate's food and dining committee deßonis said her committee is working to open pandinis and subversions earlier on saturdays so students have more options on the weekends the committee is also working with the proprietors of the new eateries in campus square to make the restaurants more student-friendly the cup an ice cream shop is already open and will soon be joined by jazzman's coffee shop and pastaficio an italian restau rant jazzman's will be operated by the wood company while b&wphoto by tom steele students enjoy a meal in rathbone dining hall one of many on campus facilities run by wood catering company b-ball tourament benefits orphans by jessica glowinski news writer the basketball court at taylor gym was a little chaotic sunday afternoon with music blasting and balls flying through the air the floor was crowded with players warming up and dancers having a good time this was the scene of kappa alpha psi's fraternities against terrorism fat three on three basketball tournament where 13 teams gathered to raise money for the twin towers orphan fund as the anniversary of sept 11 approached the members of kappa alpha psi wanted to do something to remember the tragedy but also to help the fam ilies of the victims especially the children i know what it's like to grow up without parents and a lot of the others grew up with single parents phil pleasant the presi dent of kappa alpha psi said when the attacks first happened no one really took time to think about the victims kids we wanted to help them at the same time they were working towards this very serious goal however the members of kappa alpha psi wanted their event to be fun a lot of the memorials to 9/11 weren't celebrating life they were mourning the dead pleasant explained we wanted to do something to bring people together to celebrate life in the end the alpha tau omega team made up by the self proclaimed mvp kyle corkery 05 ryan carey 05 brian krawitz 04 and dan garber 02 emerged victorious they were presented with a trophy donated by bethlehem sporting goods the focus of the day was not entirely on the competition though most people came to have a good time spontaneous dance lines formed between the courts and at times games paused while the players enjoyed the song that had just started some of the teams that were eliminated early on stuck around for the free food and music most players said they wanted to participate in the tournament because it supported a good cause this will help other kids who are less fortunate than us make it to college andrew reid 06 whose team called themselves the bad boys said i wasn't affected as much by the tragedy so i felt that i should come out and partici pate this is a good way to combine fun spirit with a good cause krawitz said this is a great idea the kappas had kappa alpha psi doesn't know how much money they raised from the tournament because some fraternities who weren't able to attend are still sending in dona tions however the fraternity made 450 from selling 9/11 ribbons last week and hope the pro ceeds from the tournament will be enough to reach their goal of 1,500 anyone interested in contributing should send dona tions to kappa alpha psi philip pleasant 124 w 4th st third floor bethlehem pa 18015 senate plans for more diversity byjohnmisinco news editor discouraging student apathy and promoting accountability and diversity on campus are the focus of a new student senate initiative unveiled this week the plan created by senate president jp matychak 03 out lines a broad set of proposals for accomplishing these goals lehigh students are quick to complain about a problem that really troubles them matychak said many forget the second step which is to tell someone who can do something about it matychak said that some ideas discussed by the senate for getting students more involved in campus activities include making student leaders more visible and having more events and discussions between multiple clubs in addition matychak's plan calls for regular forums in which students can ask administrators questions it also suggests integrat ing student awareness into the cur riculum matychak said there are many other ideas for preventing apathy and no specific plan of action has been determined with our strength in numbers we can begin to defeat apathy matychak said there is no harm in rocking the boat the proposal also calls for pro moting student accountability in social and academic matters however matychak said spe cific policies related to this goal have yet to be decided by the senate he also emphasized that stu dents and organizations should be recognized when
