the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 5 tuesday september 17 2002 ah the lehigh news first lehigh gathers to remember 9/11 by sonja toulouse news writer students faculty and community members gathered at the university's sept 11 memorial ceremony at packer chapel wednesday afternoon for a time of remembrance reflection and renewal lt happened a year ago today and i am still speechless student senate member meagan meier 05 said everyone dissolved into a state of paralysis as keynote speaker kelly close 92 national coordinator of dis aster volunteers for the american red cross recalled the heroic acts of all those who fought through the ash and the smoke to save lives at ground zero close's responsibilities included ensuring the adequacy of health care provided and organizing teams of vol unteers to help evacuate the elderly and the disabled within the area those who were lost in last year's ter rorist attacks were honored during the ceremony as student senate president j.p matychak 03 presented president farrington with a flag that was flown over the u.s capitol in remembrance of the 12 lehigh family members who lost their lives the ceremony also featured the lehigh university choir performing the work of christopher delp 02 entitled do not fear in his closing remarks farrington asked that we consider the stirring wind b&wphoto by eve ardell students gathered at packer chapel on wednesday to commemorate the first anniversary of the sept 11 terrorist attacks during services to honor the memory of those lost u.n conference to rebuild the world by nur-e f rahman lehigh students present at international gathering on emerging from conflict assistant news editor three lehigh students trav eled to new york city on the morning of sept 9 to attend the united nations 55th annual dpi/ngo conference the department of public information's non-governmental organizations section held a conference entitled rebuilding societies emerging from conflict a shared responsibility which convened on the morning of sept 9 at the united nations the morning began with thorough screenings and strict security clearances for the ngo representatives from around the world security measures were tighter than they had ever been before more than two thousand rep resentatives attended the confer ence to focus on the important role the united nations nation al governments and civil society play in assisting countries as they emerge from the destructive experience of conflict the lehigh students were among only a handful of non u.n./ngo representatives at the conference on monday bill hunter director of the global union organized the trip for select students with interests in the topics addressed at the conference the group from lehigh was comprised of students patrick schmid 04 joshua hermias 03 and leigh cowlishaw 04 schmid and cowlishaw are the presidents of the global union and world affairs club respectively hermias in his fourth year of study at lehigh is an interna tional economics major with minors in german and interna tional relations the trip was made possible by the efforts of hunter who is a former ngo representative himself the conference held mainly to help members of non-govern mental organizations understand the state of the world in order to rebuild afflicted countries after the tragedies of 9/11 began with a session in the general assembly hall there students were given the opportunity to hear heads of state speak while sitting in the general assembly room which is usually only open to u.n dele gates and the media speakers included lakhdar brahimi special representative of the secretary-general of the united nations for afghanistan and mary robinson high commissioner for human rights robinson gave her farewell speech to the united nations at the conference monday as she planned to leave her post soon thereafter after the morning session students attended conferences led by ngo representatives and guest speakers a workshop entitled peace building in the aftermath of terrorism the role of media and mental health professionals held discussions in response to the sept 11 terrorist attacks students sat with more than 65 ngo representatives as they listened to professionals in the media and health care fields discuss their personal experi ences on the day of the attacks and the months that followed melinda murphy news reporter for wbii tv spoke of the trauma she suffered as a result of the horrific images she witnessed first-hand the day of the attacks on new york
