the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 43 friday april 26 2002 all the lehigh news first food funds collected for homeless by jasmine foreman news writer a group of concerned students gathered on die university center front lawn wednesday to raise awareness and money for the homeless in the lehigh valley and surrounding areas sponsored by the progressive student alliance and spear headed by eamon aloyo 03 the group hopes to increase campus awareness of the home less and get people at lehigh involved i did this to raise conscious ness as well as money for oxfam international and a local shelter because we thought that local as well as internation al aid was needed aloyo said the event lasted from 8 a.m until 8 p.m students were asked to donate money hygiene prod ucts canned food books clothes or even to just stop and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to be given to a local homeless shelter all money raised will be given to oxfam aj jada 04 stopped by to made a sandwich i think a lot of lehigh stu dents are well off and they realize this and a lot of them are willing to do something to give back to the community jada said catherine moran 02 said she enjoyed her time on the lawn and was glad she could help this was something fun and easy to do for a great cause she said sarah zurat 02 helped orch estrate the event she said she feels that this was an important event for students to participate in there are a lot of really good activities going on at lehigh and sometimes we get so caught up in them that we don't look outside the campus zurat said aloyo said that he and his friends had originally wanted the event to be a 24-hour sleep out but the university required 24 hour police surveillance which would have been too expen sive kristof lowyck 02 said we were disappointed that the univer sity wouldn't allow a sleep-out without having us pay for the police protection which would have used up all of our deviations aloyo said another way he felt that the university failed to help was in the area of donations wood dining services declined to donate peanut butter and jelly for the demonstration mike lupori resident district manager of wood dining said he was not contacted by anyone con nected with the homeless event li&wplwtn by tomsii 1:1.1 for anyone who missed the event or would like to donate items there will be a box placed in the upper uc outside of the food court if you wish to make a donation visit www.oxfam.org www.the hunirersite.com or www.mercy coips.com other events on campus to celebrate national volunteers1 week included a table to make peanut butter and jelly sand wiches in ulrich student center tuesday and a spaghetti dinner in taylor college wednesday all proceeds went to camelot for children concerned students spent wednesday on the university center lawn rallying for help gathering food and money for the homeless those passing by were encouraged to make sandwiches senate picks new officers for 02-03 byjohnmisinco b&w photo by aiitumn cruz senate xiv also approved a plan to allow student clubs to use a gold plus card reader lor fundraisers the device will allow students to make such purchases using their gold plus account the senate voted in january to purchase the card reader clubs will be able to reserve the card reader through an online form the reader will be stored in the student activities office in ulrich student center a second reader will be avail able in the university center in the fall as with other gold plus transactions 3 percent of each sale goes to the bursar's office a 25 rental fee will be charged for the reader the idea for the gold plus card reader originated last assistant news kditor tuesday marked a changing of the guard for student senate in a joint meeting the newly elected senate xv elected j.p matychak 03 as president while senate xiv tied up loose ends for the year other newly elected officers are anne glowacki 04 vice president;julia nolf 05 secre tary and melissa klein 04 parliamentarian matt giusto 03 returns as treasurer senate xiv closed out busi ness by discussing its accom plishments and hopes for the new senate as one of its last acts senate approved the club budgets for the 2002-2003 school year the figures will not be released to the clubs until the fall pat carbine spoke tuesday as part of the
