the brown and white vol 109 no 42 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday april 23 2002 all the lehigh news first play off to alarming start by christine donnelly macbeth rages against his fate as predicted by the weird sisters and turns to the instruments of darkness the play runs through friday look for more pictures online at www.bw.lehigh.edu news writer tate 04 army after returning from a successful battle the two encounter three weird sisters kasia voychick 04 gelsey bell 04 and catherine shields 02 the trio has a startling prophe cy macbeth is thane of cawdor and will be king they also predict that banquo will father kings macbeth soon learns that the king has named him thane and designated his eldest son malcolm simon gibson 03 successor to the throne pepper said macbeth's obses sions make him susceptible to the cunning methods of the instru ments of darkness his invocation of them leads to his ultimate doom sword fighting and prophe cies have taken center stage at zoellner arts center's diamond theater with die premiere of macbeth thursday evening directed by pam pepper the two hour and 45 minute play features a 35-person cast in an unsettled world macbeth chadd zivic 03 con tends violently with reason and passion as he carries out his ill conceived ascension to the throne set while scotland is at war with norway macbeth and banquo sam kirk 05 are com manders in king duncan's tyler carolyn shemwell 02 who plays lady macbeth said that her character is complex i have truly enjoyed por traying her it has been one of the most difficult roles i have ever played shemwell said so much is involved in the way of diction articulation and acting nate clark a fifth-grade student from emmaus plays the son of macduff a scottish noble in addition to the cast 63 crew members have assisted in producing the play which has been actively worked on for one year li&w photo by autumn cruz walkers march take back night ! by lauren eisner news writer _^^ students marched thursday for take back the night protesting violence against women the march began at the mountaintop lookout and con tinued through areas on campus considered to be unsafe jennifer rudnicki 02 who works for the women's center said the march went to target ed areas we walked die unsafe places on campus according to our survey she said none of these places are really well lit hopefully the police will be on top of that now signs displaying facts about violence were posted along the march route one sign included a statistic that freshman women are at the highest risk for sexual assault on the first day of college when they are still unfa miliar with their surroundings they are still at high risk through thanksgiving break outside stoughton house another sign reminded onlook ers of the murder of jeanne cleary in april 1986 a fresh man at the time she was tor tured raped and sodomized in her dorm room the march concluded with refreshments and a perfor mance by the university gospel choir on the university center front lawn lloyd steffen university chaplain also spoke we came this evening to remember all of the women earth day attracts butterfly by randi greenberg news writer seventy students and faculty members crowded packard auditorium friday to celebrate earth day with environmental ist julia butterfly hill hill best known for living in a redwood tree in california told the audience about her 738 day ordeal the air was so pure it actu ally tasted sweet on your tongue hill said i just felt like . hugging the trees for i was feeling something sacred for the first time ever hill said she had only planned on living in the tree for one month surrounded by thousands of 300-foot tall trees however hill said she began to feel at home once i was up there i did not want to come down hill said i strongly feel that you must put your body where your beliefs are her four foot by six foot platform served as a kitchen bathroom den and bedroom a support team on the ground was able to send her fruits and vegetables via a rope and bucket hill said in december 15)99 the pacific lumber company which threat ened to cut down the endangered tree finally agreed to save it in addition the company agreed not to cut down any other trees for a three-acre radius after two years and eight days hill left the tree a changed person she said cruelty just can't stand the spotlight hill said i was cer tainly not the first tree sitter and i am sure i won't be the last hill was not always involved in the environmental move ment only after being injured in a severe car accident did hill begin to question her existence i began to think to myself why am i here hill said and that is what led me to the ancient redwoods of california lauren watts 05 said she thought hill's speech was inter esting hill is such a brave individ ual watts said i don't mink i could have ever spent that much time living in the conditions she dealt with not everyone agreed with some of hill's ideas however see macbeth page 5 see night page 5 see earth page 5 men's lacrosse team loses to colgate see page 20 sports 15-20 baseball 15 track 16 women's lacrosse 20 bethlehem woman discusses her life with aids after being sexually assaulted see page 3 news 1-6 college news briefs 2 sexual assault panel 4 bethlehem briefs 6 human cloning the debate continues in congress and in the laboratory see page 9 science 9-16 science briefs 9 botox injections 11 quick alexander hamilton was shot by aaron burr in the groin source www.uselessfacts.net
