that rumors of police raids on fra ternity houses feb 22 - 23 are false and that the situation has been largely misunderstood during the weekend of feb 22 - 23 there were four reported cases of alleged social policy vio lations involving fraternities on lehigh's campus that were investigated by university police the incidents have been turned over to the university judi cial process for investigation and possible judicial action no stu dents were arrested in the process of these police investigations university officials have also confirmed that these violations involved unregistered parties with alcoholic beverages avail able with 85 to 120 people in attendance dean of students sharon basso said that according to lehigh's social policy an event must be registered when there are more than 50 people gath ered and alcohol is present basso also said lehigh police searched the fraternity houses with due cause and reasonable suspicion of social policy viola tion in accordance with the stu b&wphoto by autumn cruz graduate student huiyu qian second from left socializes in the new math lounge in christmas-saucon hall which opened tuesday night with a reception faculty awards pre-break assault results in injury by tracey lomrantz news editor a male student suffered injuries which resulted in hos pitalization from an assault that occurred just before spring break according to a campus wide e-mail sent by chief of police edward shupp the assault happened at the intersection of summit street and brodhead avenue early fri march 1 the student was transported to st luke's hospital and treated for his injuries bethlehem police are also conducting an investigation the e-mail issued by shupp was a safety bulletin encourag ing students to use tracs vans and the walking escort service to travel off-campus and to travel in groups at night shupp was not available for further comment as of press time this attack is the second to occur off-campus in the past five weeks two other attacks have occurred since the beginning of the spring semester this is the first of those attacks however that resulted in injuries requiring hospital ization of the student senate pushes ulrich overhaul by john misinco assistant news editor several members of the student senate are working on a proposal that would call for a complete overhaul of the ulrich student center we're doing this because students here pay 30,000 senator oscar delavilla 03 said tuesday other schools don't pay as much and they have better student centers j.p matychak chair of the university life improvement committee said student involve ment is essential the best way to get funding faster is to create an uprising among students matychak said the university is better at listen ing to that than administrators saying it delavilla said many other college student centers including those of duke and indiana uni versities are much larger and include restaurants stores and recreational facilities he said indiana even has a bowling alley and hotel in its student center assistant dean of students jennifer volchko said she envi sions ulrich as a campus mall we want to create a more vibrant place where students go to get needs met volchko said according to volchko sasaki associates which created the university's campus and facilities development plan in 2000 eval uated ulrich to see how the space could be more effectively used sasaki's suggestions for improving ulrich included adding a bank travel agency dry cleaner video-rental shop and newsstand they also suggested converting the open space around student mailboxes into a cyber-cafe operated by a franchise such as starbucks which would include a mini computer workstation and lan connections this year a print shop and flower vending machine were added to the facility volchko said sasaki also rec ommended converting the upper level of ulrich which is now vacant into office space for student organizations and staff departments that handle student activities delavilla said he would like to see any new facility include a larger student activity office and additional space for student orga nizations the existing student activity office houses four clubs . we're shooting for the most here for every club to have their own room delavilla said volchko emphasized the importance of the space being universal to a variety of needs our needs are going to change and we have to design this to be permanent enough to have a sense of character but also be flexible enough to be responsive she said you don't want this big multipurpose room that's one day a theater and the next day a volleyball court delavilla said he is still unsure of whether a revamped student center could be created in the existing space at ulrich or whether the
