the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 31 friday february 22 2002 ah the lehigh news first new harassment policy completed by christine donnelly news writer after two previous drafts the equal opportunity harassment policy eohp committee submitted the final copy of its first task the harass ment policy for review this week by various campus orga nizations the eohp committee has three goals to create a harass ment policy to create an equal opportunity policy and to provide the president with a report on campus climate with regard to diversity issues the purpose of the harass ment policy is to define prohib ited conduct and set procedures for addressing and resolving harassment complaints jean soderlund eohp com mittee co-chair said she hopes the policy will suit everyone's needs we are working to make sure that the new harassment policy balances the needs and rights of all members of the lehigh com munity she said the committee sent a copy of its first draft of the harassment policy to the lehigh community on nov 20 2001 by email and asked for comments based on those opinions and meetings they came up with a second draft and released for suggestions to the campus com munity on dec 19 after another round of responses along with three open sessions for staff students and faculty to discuss the policy the third draft of the harassment policy is now about to be intro duced we will seek endorsement for the harassment policy from the student senate graduate student council employee relations advisory committee wireless phone agreement met by lisa schulter news writer lehigh will soon offer a campus-wide wireless phone agreement with at&t wireless lizanne hurst and roy gruver of information resources along with joseph hardenberg director of purchasing have been working to establish this service since last summer lehigh has worked with at&t wireless for almost eight years but primari ly with corporate plans for busi ness and faculty use this is the first service of its kind to be offered to on-campus students faculty and staff for personal use bring about a larger user base and making future wireless services possible it became important from a volume-leveraging standpoint to include students as well as faculty and staff hardenberg said we also like to believe that we've laid some ground work for other colleges hurst recognizes the pros and cons of finalizing the new project we have to catch all the bugs now hurst said it's interesting and frustrating at the same time participants can expect more minutes than plan offerings and discounts off monthly service as well as phones and accessories also an at&t wireless mini-store will be set up on campus so that someone will always be available to answer questions saving a trip to the lehigh valley mall which houses the nearest at&t store hardenberg and hurst said at&t wireless has not previ ously offered this type of plan in a university setting which was a bit challenging getting started took longer than expected the start date was originally jan 1 but it has now been pushed back to march 1 we think it is something worth postponing to be able to include all members of the campus community hurst said students received an e-mail survey last month concerning their personal wireless plans hardenberg explained that this was a method of estimating the b&w photo by autumn cruz susan liv 05 left and rob riley 02 perform in august strindberg's miss julie which opened last night in zoellner's diamond theater the lehigh production of miss julie runs through feb 28 for more exclusive photos of miss julie check out the brown and white photo gallery at bw.lehigh.edu cesar gives laboratory practice by lauren eisner news writer lehigh expanded its educa tional programs in biological and chemical sciences in 1999 with the implementation of the cesar program or the center for emeritus scientists in academic research this program allows students to conduct research at lehigh labs with volunteer industrial sci entists and gain both a mentor and an adviser in the fields of chemistry biochemistry and other biological sciences primarily an academic year program it is provided for stu dents who may earn 1-3 credits with one credit gained for every 3 hours a week of work in the lab since its installment the lehigh community has viewed the cesar program positively cesar is a terrific program the cesar program matches students up with mentors that have usually retired from industr program participant tara lukievics said in my expe rience my mentors/research advisers helped me in areas even outside of the laboratory i learned a lot while working on my research project program director ted mellin agreed that the program can be very beneficial to students we feel that cesar offers undergraduate science majors at lehigh a unique opportunity to obtain firsthand research experi ence mellin said students learn valuable
