the brown and white vol 109 no 28 luesday february 5 2002 all the lehigh news first two freshmen robbed at gunpoint off-campus by john misinco assistant news editor two students were robbed early thursday morning while walking on the 700 block of atlantic street meghan sinneck 05 and christopher mac donald 05 told police a red sedan with four men inside passed them twice around 1 a.m according to the morning call the second time the car passed two of the men got out and asked for directions to livingston street the men then displayed hand guns and took the students money aad possessions mac donald said the robbers took his jacket ski hat a pocket knife and wallet sinneck said they took her ski jacket and room key the morning call reported after the robbery the car fled east on eighth street neither student was injured according to the victims one of the men was in his 20s and wore a yellow jacket and black pants the other wore a dark jacket lehigh chief of police edward shupp issued a safety bulletin thursday reminding stu dents to travel in groups at night to use tracs or the walking escort service and to lock their dorm rqoms or residences b&wphoto by autumn cruz arlene gottfried a documentary photographer from brooklyn n.y discusses one of the photographs in her collection eternal light in maginnes hall tuesday the exhibit will be on display in dußois hall until april 6 residence hall section doors unlocked for safety by lauren eisner news writer lehigh's policy has always been to lock the section doors of residence halls at night and on weekends but a decision was made prior to finals last semester to keep the doors per manently unlocked for fire safety this new policy was instituted when the bethlehem fire mar shall ordered the residence hall staff to permanently unlock sec tion doors after the installation of sprinkler systems in all of the dorms this sudden change sur prised many students as they turned their section keys into their gryphons while some students may look at the unlocking of section doors as more of a danger than protector of student safety dana gale 05 said she is pleased with this new action that was the most annoying thing in the whole dorm because if you wanted to get in you just had to bang on the door and it annoyed the people in the middle section gale said jimmy harris 05 said that the convenience of the unlocked doors outweighs any negatives i guess some people might not feel as safe but to me it saves time and energy and that's good harris said by the time i make it to the top of the hill i don't feel like dealing with locked doors fire safety may have been the cause of unlocking the doors but personal safety still remains an issue for residence halls according to ozzie breiner associate director of residential services extra security measures will be taken by the lehigh com munity to ensure safety without the locks the residence hall staff is aware of this and make several rounds each night breiner seniors apply for teaching positions by nora linscheid news editor applications are now being accepted for graduating seniors interested in teach for america a program in which outstanding college graduates commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools graduating seniors of all majors are invited to apply for the program which places teach ers in 17 locations across the united states the locations include atlanta baltimore bay area chicago detroit houston los angeles rural louisiana and baton rouge mississippi delta new jersey new mexico-navajo nation greater new orleans new york city eastern north carolina phoenix rio grande valley and washington d.c according to melissa golden 91 vp of marketing for teach for america the program has two goals to provide underprivileged chil dren with excellent teachers who will help them excel in the classroom and to provide recent college graduates with leadership experience and help them form a commitment to social change golden said she thinks gradu ates would benefit from this program by influencing other stu dents you see a lot of lehigh stu dents taking on leadership roles in various industries golden said but they haven't really been exposed to opportunities in areas of social change director of technical training for teach for america amy zweiman 99 said most lehigh students are exposed to on campus interview in the fields of business and engineering after graduation a lot of peo ple have die question where do i go what do i do zweiman said social service is a way for people to incorporate a lot of tilings they learn at lehigh it is a great option that is not really evident right now because teach for america hasn't actively recruited at lehigh only two students in 1990 and
