eliminat ing the pacing and easter/passover breaks of spring semester starting next academic year while we have heard news of the calendar change relatively recently a change of some kind has been wanted for some time in april 1996 the board of trustees assigned to the provost the responsibility of setting the university calendar based upon the recommendations of the calendar committee the calendar committee was comprised of representatives from student life graduate students council faculty residential services athletics zoellner the registrar chaplain and student senate in the fall of 2001 provost ron yoshida accepted the committee's changes and put them in place for a term of fall 2002 through spring 2006 according to an e-mail sent by provost yoshida there were five accepted changes the first change is to elimi nate the monday registration day before the first day of classes in each semester freshmen orien tation therefore would begin on a friday and classes would start the following monday the second change is to merely accept that the fall semes ter must have a pacing break as well as a thanksgiving break the third change states that the only break during spring semester will be spring break the spring semester should have one break that is one week long and falls near the middle of the semester i.e week seven or eight classes will then resume for either six or seven weeks for a total of 14 weeks in the semes ter the email said the fourth change is to be aware of the religious policy students may obtain an excused absence if they choose to be home for a religious holiday the university's religious policy can be viewed on the website any student who feels the need to take part in a religious observance that conflicts with the academic calendar can go to the dean of students office and get an excuse the provost's office always issues a reminder to faculty to be lenient to accom modate students religious needs professor rick weisman said the fifth change is to make graduation occur earlier than it has in the past and allot a shorter time between the end of finals and graduation eliminating the breaks makes sense in the fact that graduation will be earlier but it's also nice to have the vacations charlotte parker 05 said commencement will now take place on the second monday after the end of final exams in spring 2003 for example classes will end by april 29 and graduation will tbe may 19 the changes were made because it was felt that the spring semester is too long and that it is unfair to have a christian holiday off and not other religious holi days weisman said most of our peer schools do not have a speaker talks to psychology dept by blair tapper news writer laura gonnerman of the university of southern california who has
